Advice on fuelling/carb setup

Post by bigbadjonno »

Hi all,
Picked up the new toy today (it's an 03 plate, 25000 miles) but I'm a bit miffed by the way it's running.
Starts fine with a little choke, warms up ok, pulls well under load up to around 7k rpm then goes really flat. She's also spitting back on a steady throttle up to 3k rpm.
She's wearing standard cans and looks to be in very good order, I'm just wondering whether it's been jetted for race cans previously maybe? Any advice welcome.
I've been out of the bike game for 9 years, so really looking forward to getting back into it. Manual CCT's are already on the shopping list, and it doesn't really need much else.
Apart from a good hiding

Sounds like a mixture of symptoms with a combination of possible cause/s

Timing 180 out
Fuel tap diaphragm
Airleak intake/exhaust / messed up jetting / plug caps

Systematically work through em to rule out after giving it a basic service i.e plugs, air filter
It may be that your whole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.

 cheers Wicky, just found the post about timing being 180* out, describes it to a tee! Guess what I'll be doing tomorrow!
Seller did say that it had had new CCT's recently and there's a receipt for shims in the document wallet.....

Had it been laid up before you got it ?, sounds like it could be old fuel gone off and blocked pilot jets (the low end spluttering). if that's a possible cause then drain the float bowls then try adding some fuel additive like Forte moto 1 + 2 to a tank of fuel. If that doesn't work then carb strip and clean.

Cheers guys, timing was indeed out by 180 degrees! Would never have believed it could run like that, but I suppose it's carb fed with wasted spark ignition it's quite easy. What a transformation though, rides like it should now.
Also found the intake stacks back to front (I guess arrows are not enough for some people to line things up.....) and the choke mechanism plastic nut is split.

You can plastic-weld the nut, or epoxy resin.

Still, it's an easy fix, 180 out.
Was it a main dealer that cocked it?
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

No, was a home mechanic who'd bought the bike to do up after it lunched the cct on the previous owner. Seemed like he knew what he was on about, although when I questioned him about it not revving past 7 he claimed that he hadn't ridden it that hard! Kinda difficult NOT to ride it that hard :D
