Re: hiring car abroad
Hi, stick to big companies like Avis, Europecar, Hertz etc. If the CDW is low pay for it, make sure you walk round and check the car for marks and dents when they hand over and make sure they make a note of the damages etc. Check what fuel level you are supposed to return it with and stick to it otherwise they hammer you for fuel.

Aircon....now why would you want to make yourself ill breathing in freezing cold recycled air. Juts open the bloody windows, wind in hair like on a bike.
Where about's in Portugal are you going them. You can pick up a hire car right outside Faro Airport.

Very good advice there, especially the bit about checking the vehicle over first before driving off in it,alternative_vtr wrote:Hi, stick to big companies like Avis, Europecar, Hertz etc. If the CDW is low pay for it, make sure you walk round and check the car for marks and dents when they hand over and make sure they make a note of the damages etc. Check what fuel level you are supposed to return it with and stick to it otherwise they hammer you for fuel.

Thanks guys
I don't land in faro till 10:30pm :/
Will give car good check over before and pointing out any thing I don't think should be there.
Do they always come with full tank of fuel?

the rules on fuel vary, but in most holiday destinations they claim to give you a full tank of petrol [funny how the needle will drop from full after only 1 mile!] which the charge you for, and then you have to try and give the car back to them as close to empty as you dare otherwise they make profit on what you leave in the tank.thumperslaw wrote:Thanks guys

Re: hiring car abroad
The smallest car I've ever hired abroad was a Toyota Yaris during the winter in Norway. Granted it had studded tyres but I drove from Tromso up to Alta and back and it performed surprisingly well and given it's small size was quite spacious.
Re: hiring car abroad
used to work for hertz in the uk there cars we refuelled to first click of the pump ,as others have said check it for damage thats crucial
ps if you work for a big company check if they have an account with one of the nationals it gets u discount on personal hiring
pps if its a hertz car it will have a yellow sticker in the boot normally under the carpet where the previous damage is marked it has been known
for customers to add additional damage to it and say its been missed on inspection
