random question. in an attempt to lower the tail end of my bike, i'm hoping to make a lower subframe with a single seat. i'm looking for a single seat, maybe blade or similar that sits around the tank like a standard seat. i can then work around that. any ideas would be welcome. usual response from my mates is, get a different bike, but it wouldnt be a storm, so that's not happening

You might end up modifying the rear of the tank to suit the seat.
Best head to a breaker and offer some up.

i was thinking of taking the tank with me to the local breakers. probably the best option

Take the bike, then you can check the angle of a new subframe and the positions of the mounting points.

bike isnt running at the mo. my fault, i left it too long. carbs will need de-gunking at some point. meanwhile, i'm terrorizing the neighbourhood with my silver wing scoot...

The top mounting points in particular are narrower on a vee twin that on an equivalent in line four, where the frame has to be wide enough to wrap round the engine.
Although you can extend or narrow the mount by welding, it usually isn't as strong.

But as you can't get the bike to the breaker to trial fit any suitable options, careful measurements and photos will have to do.

You can fairly easily change the lower mounts. They're in compression rather than tension, so the strength at that point is less important.

thanks for that. some of those home made fighter subframes are a little scary design wise but i have a damn good welder who wont build anything unless it's sound

for future reference, a suzuki sv650 solo seat fits very well around the tank if anyone is modifying their storm. i had one delivered today so planning to change the rear end when it's a bit warmer in the shed

That's handy to know, thanks for the update

You'll have to post up some photo's when you start modifying the rear end :D

I hope it all goes well,

Chris.
