As far as I can see there are only 3 wires going to the thermostat housing.

(1) One wire has the big Green connector block as you mentioned.

(2) Underneath the Green connector there should be another wire connected to the Thermosensor (this is like a threaded bar terminal connection if that makes sense).

(3) The third wire has a round ring connector type which fits under one of the thermostat housing bolts, I think you mention that one as well. That ring connector has a spade connector on the end of it making it quicker and easier to remove I'm guessing.

So if you still have a spare wire it must be for something else :eh:

I'll have another look at the Haynes manual, not that I will see anything more than you lol.

Wherever it it goes it can't be very far away from the thermostat housing, a frame earth a possibility :eh:

I have been thinking about this odd wire and did a bit of digging as I haven't come up with anything from my Workshop manuals.

This shows the number of earths (ground) points on the bike, and explains where they all go:

The link here is where I got the diagram from, thank to Erik:

I'm posting this photo up on behalf of northmanuk. This is the wire and connector he is having difficulty in working out where it goes:

OK but whats the other end conected to ?

That pic is a bit chocolate teapot...

It looks like the wire that goes to the top of the thermostat... Look at your pic it has the same green dot on it... Maybe the ring conector is missing...
Making up since 2007, sometimes it's true...Honest...

Does the wire in your photo come out of the loom at the same exit as the 2 wires that go to the big green plug? (the 2 wires are pink with a white line, and green with a black line if I remember correctly).
As I have ringed in red below on my bike :?:

Ah, well that wire being one of those 3 is the correct one that goes on to the thermostat housing as shown in the photo of my bike below, the one you have fitted must be for somewhere else. Try looking to see what other wire(s) exit the loom with that wrongly fitted wire.
