2005 vtr1000f hitting limiter at just over 8000 rpm

Post by Scoie1981 »

Hi fellow riders Ross here I have just purchased a vtr firestorm 2005 model I am hoping you can instill me with some knowledge as I said I got a 05 vtr1000f and before riding it I thought I'd service her so I did oil, oil filter and air filter when I opened the air box I had a bmc air filter but I changed it back to stock air filter and when I took her for a ride I found I was hitting a rev limiter like effect at just over 8000 rpm after some reading on the forums would I be correct in thinking this rev limit effect could be caused by myself when I changed the filter as it would have been jetted for a high air flow filter and now it's back to a stock one the old girl is starving for air? she has 52000 km on the clock, slip on yoshi's but not sure if this is all the mods as when she is warming up the Thermo's kick on at 75 degrees celcuis so she may have other mods aswell done by previous owner

Did it happen before you changed the air filter?

I know im a Richard but I didn't check it prior, and when I test rode it I had short streets to ride on and never took it to the end of the rev range I just clicked through the gears and listened to the engine for any rattles/knocks all was fine.. I did ask the bloke next door and he did say if it had been on the dyno and had been tuned for the bmc and jets had been tuned to match the filter it could cause the engine to act up like this

Welcome to the club. Hope you get he problem solved soon.

1st obvious thing to check is the air filter, but also when you are in there you need to make sure the plastic shield, which fills the gaps in front of the carbs up to the frame and the headstock, is in place. Without that the airflow gets turbulent into the airbox and can't flow enough

One other reason it might not Rev out is the cam timing may 180 degrees out.. if the owner fitted manual CCTs or has had a CCT failure in the past, they can time the cylinders at the wrong TDC and end up with a Big Bang firing order which the airbox can't flow enough air to feed the high RPMs.

Hello and welcome to the forum. These bikes are very fussy regarding the air flow (ask fabio). If it was mine i would put the other filter back in and try it.As Al said timing could be 180 degrees out.
SO WHEN DOES THIS OLD ENOUGH TO KNOW BETTER KICK IN

A new stock air filter flows plenty enough air for it to hit the proper rev limiter at 9200, so it's not that.

Does it run perfectly up to 8 then stutter? Or start to run out of puff around 6,500?

Have the cam chain tensioners been changed to manual ones, or the stopper mode done?
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

The bike still has auto ccts not sure if a stopper mod has been done.. its runs pretty nice all the way up to just over 8k and then it hits the limit i did think it had a tiny surge but I could be wrong.
Cheers for the help guys I appreciate it

id put the bmc filter back in and try it before you do anything else. also as Al said make sure the under carb plastic tray is in place, they can be fussy about airflow.
the older i get,the faster i was

Welcome . I’d check the cam timing first then go from there

 cheers guys she is fixed.. it was as simple as putting the BMC air filter back in and the big girl revs past 10k rpm now with no issues and has way more power and no surging.. loving the filth power stands I have come from a 2001 bussa and the power is non comparable but I love the VTR big :D all the way down the road
