ok took it apart and it was a mess.. im not sure whoever has been in here knew what was going on. iv tried everywork manual i can find and its not a lot of help..

1. the bearing looks new but it has an open side and a blanked side. is this correct or should it be open both sides.

2. the oil seal. i cant find a clear picture if the closed side faces inwards(towards the engine) or faces outwards towards the mechanical seal ?

cheers sir that solves that. my seal was the wrong way round and god knows why the bearings sealed on one side. :thumbup:

Is it not like that so oil can get to the bearing on one side and the other side the seal keeps the water in the water jacket and not allow it to mix with the oil :?:

from the water pump side we have mechancal seal. then oil seal then bearing.. i wondering why my bearing was sealed because if oil cant get through it then the oil seal will be running on the impeller shaft thats not being cooled by water or oil?..

it seemed a simple question about a wee bearing until you start to think about it lol..

Out of interest. Was it easy to dismantle?

I've got a right hand case with the impeller still in place and I'm wondering if it's worth the effort to remove before I sell.

it came out pretty easy. a few mins with a wooden mallet and it came out fine and no damage to the impeller shaft.

I was swapping out a damaged RH crankcase cover and only realised when I got the cover off that I'd need to remove the impeller from the damaged case to the new one. Now that I have properly read the manual there are loads of specialist tools needed to swap out and replace all the parts and I don't have the tools :(

I am a total amateur so am looking for some advice;

1. Once the impeller is removed what parts is it best to replace; Mechanical seal + Oil Seal + Bearing 620?
2. Is impeller removal and replacement a task beyond a rookie's ability?
3. Would it be better to take the new take the damaged cover and new cover / parts to a Honda garage and ask them to swap over?

You can remove it with a bearing puller, and tap it back in using a socket on the end of the shaft to protect it. Don't seat it too far home, or it won't spin freely.

It's not difficult.

If you do take it somewhere, don't bother with a Honda dealer, any back street car repair or service garage will swap it over for a tenner or a packet of biscuits.

(Ordinary biscuits, not Al' s sexual deviant ones)

Thanks Tony, I really would like to try it myself, not to save money but to learn. It's a shame that I am so far away from GrainStorm :plainsmile

I am not sure exactly what side of the crankcase cover I would be pulling from or what the puller would attached to.

I'll keep googling to see if I can get a better understanding...even an earlier post on the topic ' Re: waterpump seal' does not make it clearer :oops:

Done mine recently, not that bad a job, just very fiddly, clutch cover needs to come of too, so you will also need new clutch cover gasket, and also change the oil seal, and bearing while you do it, I did not use no special tools, the main thing is to measure how far the impeller protrudes through the cover, then when you refit make sure it's at the same distance. To remove it I used a socket over the impeller and tapped it out, then remove both seals/bearing, the tricky bit is when you press the impeller back in it pushes the bearing out, so I used a socket on top of the bearing, while I tapped the impeller from the other side, that will keep bearing in place. sometimes the impeller blade is very rusty and pitted, and the mechanical seal, can be corroded in place,, so you may need to clean it up. I only used a genuine Honda clutch cover gasket, all other parts were pattern parts, wemoto sell all the parts needed, and I got the bearing of eBay, let me know if you need link for them.

Quick update - put an 8mm socket on the shaft and put the cover on the vice and whacked the socket a few times with a nylon hammer and out it popped :D
Pressed out the bearing, ruined the mechanical seal and the rubber seal came out fine. The impeller, bearing and rubber seal look in good condition but I'll need a new mechanical seal.

It's progress :lol:
