problem removing the front axel bolt

Post by agentpineapple »

i'm having a bit of a mare.
I've decided to put better brakes on my bike, so I've sold my old set-up, wavy discs, sp2 calipers and master, asv levers and so on, so today I try to remove them from the bike, the first issue is the lack of decent tools, what an utter pta it is without good tools.
the fork pinch bolts were on to tight, but I got them off, the calipers were easy, as was the brake mc and lever.
but the major issue is the front wheel spindle bolt, there's some play in the 22mm socket i'm using, which isn't helping, I assume it's a 22mm socket that I need, as a 21mm is just too small.
no matter what I do I can't get the axel bolt to budge, I've even used a scaffold pole on the end of a 1/2 ratchet for extra leverage, but because of the slight play in the socket it just won't undo.
I have a theory as to why this might be, when carl knocked me off a couple of months ago, the axel bolt did have a build up off what seemed like white powder stuck to one of it's sides, I took a screw driver to remove it, but i'm thinking the bolt/axel may have been damaged in the accident, maybe even slightly bent, hence not being able to undo it.
so first am I right in using a 22mm socket.
and secondly has anyone got any tips on how to undo the axel bolt.
should I be putting a screw driver threw through the other end of the axel and counter turning it it help release the bolt at the other end?
I seem to think that was needed when re-attaching the wheel, but it's been a while since I've removed a front wheel.
helpful suggestions welcome, mac you can do one.......

Yes it is a 22mm socket.

pinch bolts should be tight on the other side so the spindle doesn't spin.

get a better fitting socket would help, they must have motor factors in Spain ?

counter clockwise just incase your tightening it by mistake

I think it's his fault for this happening in the first place, he should do the decent thing and fly out here and fix it, well he could if he had a valid passport.....doh!!!

If it was bent then the wheel would not spin true very much doubt that's the case.

Stop buying cheap Chinese tools.

hammer and combination wrench (use ring side on bolt) should solve it. If you find 22mm near to you.

I wish I had those tools, i'm waiting for a friend to arrive back from the uk, he should be here on the 15th, he's a retired engineer, he should have some decent tools for me to borrow...
i'm still pissed off tho, because even with the shabby tools I have, it should have budged, even when my 19st body building brother had a go(using the scaffold pole for extra leverage) it still didn't budge... :(
i've got until the 17th to get the blasted thing off... :x

try a sharp tape from the side ,just one mind, might just loosen the threads a bit ( think like how an impact driver works )
