non starter ..Pls help :-)

Post by monkeymatt »

Hi .thought I'd pick the brains of the more knowledgeable on here .
A mate of mine has a yr 2000 storm with 18k on the clock. 5 he other day is apparently made a funny noise and he shut it off. Wouldn't start again . Recovered home .
checked cct all good but still replaced for manual ones. Still no fire .....
After a bit of scratching heads we checked the spark -all good.
compression - all good .
changed the r/r for mine from mine which is good and the finned version.- still no fire . It will run on easy start.
changed the fuel tap for a perfect 1 - still no fire . It's turning over but not starting .
any ideas .
its gunna be a long week haha :Argue:

Sounds like a fuel problem. Take fuel & vacuum pipes off carbs fuel pipes in collector of some type. Suck on vacuum pipe. If fuel runs out of pipes, it proves pipework & tap. Next try carbs. Vacuum pipe could be split. So proving you have petrol reaching the carbs is the start

check the oil level, if the oil drops to low, it will not start, something to do with oil pressure....
its worth discounting it.

and a carb clean as the pilot and main jets can block and even the choke

Would it run on easy start if jets blocked? I know its good stuff but not always helpful. Have you had plugs out are they wet?

Changed plugs just in case they were dead. Both old and new plugs are wet

Old plugs sparked no issues but as we had new ones anyway we just changed them anyway and new plugs work fine also

Are you 100% sure the timing is correct?

Sounds like fuel starvation may not be the issue. Maybe worth checking timing is correct. Maybe carbs 8O

OK so they are wet from fuel being sprayed into the combustion chamber, so the bike is getting fuel and air mixture, and you checked both plugs for a spark so there's no problem that side either hmmmmm.

That's where we are both stumped... Both plugs wet and both plugs sparking even tried my coil packs just in case .and my tank and battery... The plot thickens. :Banned:

Is the choke sticking out (on) that will stop it from starting as it will be getting to much fuel
