hesitates between 3-5k, it's a carb cleaning party :-)

Post by thegreenwelder »

Good morning people!! Im just in preparation for abit of a head banging session (a night in the garage,3 riding pals, the girls inside on the wine, couple of crates of cider, all topped with a dam good giggle) with my storm. Between 3-5k she hesitates quite abit. There is more than enough advice on this topic on here, but I'm just putting it out there. Wish me luck. By the way she's a 97, red with gold wheels. Job list; carbs off, stripped down, clean, re assemble, setup hopefully balanced if ady brings his gauges. thanks for listening :D

Check the size of the pilot jets as you want 48s fitted .
Some came with 45s and they are too small .
If you have 48s fitted you want the mixture screws set around - 1.1/2 front 1.3/4 turns out rear .

Check air filter what you have also, oem type paper filter is running better in low and mid revs.

Is it a surge you're describing? Mine is being worked on right now to cure it.
48 pilots and a stage 1 dynojet kit and a prayer should get me over the line.
It may only be my opinion but it's mine!

It turns out that the carbs are 45s,so ive sorted me a set of 48s. Had a wicked night aswell, plenty of laughs, and it didn't take all 3 of us, but we all done abit. And it would be nice to think we all learned abit. There's an after market air filter (mesh faced type) on there too. Can't wait for jets to arrive

Is the mesh on the bottom of the filter and paper on top. If so that is a pattern part hi flo filter. hi flo being the brand, it's not literally higher flowing.

its a real fine mesh both sides with a dark red matting (type) in the middle in a zigzag profile, with no brand/logo. As for Brick yeah thanks it is a cool name for a cool dog,he's the bulldog staffy x.

Hi, just to let you know, the 48s made the storm run cleaner but still has the hesitation. Could it be possible for the timing to be out a tooth coz it seems to come of 1 pot.

Did you adjust the mixture to suit when you changed the pilots. Carb tuning is not a one trick pony and takes a bit of tweaking here and there and when you change one thing it has an effect on another, so you may even have to adjust your needle height slightly now you have a bigger pilot circuit.

No. The cam timing can't go out by itself unless someone's not set it right and it can't be intermittent.

Tried a different air filter? New plugs? A squirt of wd40 round the coils and plug leads, and into the plug caps?
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

Hey greenwelder did you get a result on this,
i've got mine doing exactly the same,
carbs have been on & off so many times its doin my nut in,
I've been through every thing, jets out good old clean up,re balanced,
i appreciate upsizing jets......but it's been ok for the past 10 years,
maybe i have overlooked something as simple as air filter,
choke cable was siezed in chamber with spring corroded away did that thinking it was sorted ......still no joy.
It's got fuel starvation written all over it,& it does clear with half choke, which doesnt really point to a blocked filter,
last go at it,
i've been through thick & thin with the old girl & really begrudged to let her go,but its time to consider a part ex ( with a heavy heart)
