Chain Lube, Chain Wax, or WD40?

Post by Mav617 »

Whilst the Hound is still some way off turning it's wheels in anger again, what do people recommend? I used to use an expensive chain lube on the FZRs/SZR but in recent times Chain Wax seems to the thing. I've even heard you can use WD-40/GT85, which doesn't fling off or leave much residue for grit and dirt to cling to?
I'm so unlucky that if there is such a thing as re-incarnation I'll come back as me!

Dont use WD-40 it will clean off all the lube & evaporate leaving you with no lube...!

Wax is OK, Scotoiler is better.

My small Honda riders info book says... SAE 80/90 Gear oil on the chain
I fitted a "loober" small cylinder which drips a given amount of oil
on the chain ... a less sophisticated Scott oiler but a very effective
oiling device.... for less than £20 it gets 10w/40w mineral oil
and the chains fine..

Clean the chain with kerosene, then apply heavy differential gear oil and seal in with a good wax. Lasts for 600 miles

My fav is Wurth High Performance Dry Chain Lub, very little fling off hence no mess.

IMO if you commute daily a scottoiler is the answer.

Over the years I've used most oils, waxes (cook in the tray in the oven  ), greases & many of the bikes I've had have been fitted with Scottoilers.

Now I just use WD40. I apply it by spinning the rear wheel when it's on the centre stand after each ride :D

I do agree it sounds terrible, but my theory is that with todays modern O or X ring chains there is no way that any of the lubes mentioned above will penetrate the sealing rings & lube the pins.

They are lubed with white grease at manufacture & if they did leak due to the unbelievable centrifugal forces that chains are put through there would be white grease everywhere.

So I recon there is no way in hell that spraying or painting any lube on a chain is going anywhere apart from on top of the links & all over the bike.

Bel-Ray 6 in 1, similar to WD40. I just apply it and wipe the excess off, holds 200-400 miles. Never clean the chain, as all the debris come out with aplication and wipeoff the grease. It just take me few minutes to maintain the chain.
I run 520 chain with alu rear sprocket and dont see any issue, last one was replaced after 12.000 miles.
