Frost paints http://www.frost.co.uk/automotive-paint.html Just make sure it's a high temperature resisting paint like VHT. You will have to take the pipes off to do a proper job. So be warned, the exhaust studs may snap on the cylinder head. So be prepared to replace them. :eek2

One of the guys had good results with this stuff recently.

TBH even the halfords VHT exhaust spray paint looks good. exhaust paint on the headers will always end up looking tired regardless over time so it ends up being a regular touch up. you can spend twice as much on paint but not get twice the finish.

is there no way the down pipes can be cleaned up with a coarse mop on a drill.

Yes.

It helps if you can be bothered to take them off first.

I gave mine a scrub up with a wire brush cup on a drill, in situ I might add as I couldn't be bothered to take them off, certainly improved them.
IIRC Carl took the headers off & did his by hand. He'll be along shortly to..

a/ warn of aching hands & arms & blisters.
b/snapped exhaust studs.
c/increase his post count.
