My 98-VTR-Project Castrol-ish

Post by slot »

Hi all
Sorry if this is not in the right section, please move edit etc

I figured I'd start a thread on my VTR as I've had more than inuf project bikes and the storm will be around for a long time now, or until i get a new misses, which ever happens first

I bought the bike in Nov 08 like (#1) picture

I've rode her a few times and subsequently joined up here :D
So having read and posting up about the dredded CCT's fault, i've started to strip her down ready for converting to manual's
So now have cleaned, re-polished rim's and cleaned again, i got a bit bored with the few extra day's until a start work for the new year
I didn't really like the look of the belly pan so . . .
She now look's like this, with help from some cheap ebay find's (#2) (#3)
She still needs alot of work to the finish, but you get the idea
I also plan a complete colour change, away from the Castrol theme
They will look similar to that Mario guy's fairings, i just hope i'm not infringing any copy right law's ?? :?
The difference's will be they will be a 1 piece panel (Per side) and i don't intend to produce them, just for my own bike !! do you think this will potentially not intentionally piss him off ??? (I'm not going to say what panel's i've used)
Comments welcome
More pic's soon, if i'm not sued ?
Dave

I'm good with my hands and not with my mouth !
and talk of polishing rims too.

Pervert

Look forward to seeing the work in progress. There are few things more satisfying in life than pissing off people on new "superbikes" when you ride all over them on a 10 year old Storm with a Spitfire soundtrack.
Two bikes, still only four cylinders!

Hi Dave,

Nothing wrong with posting this in this section :D

What you've done so far is looking good, although to be fair we really need your pic's to be a bit bigger and taken with the camera lower down so we can really see what you've achieved so far.

As far as copy rights are concerned I don't see you'll have any problems if you're only making them for yourself. I doubt they'll be identical to Mario's anyway so you shouldn't be up-setting anyone :!:

Look forward too seeing your progress :!: :D

Thanks Chris

I'll take some better fairing pic's soon :D

After reading the post about the rear shock bush warning, i thought i'd check the condition of my bike
Anyway i kind of forgot the stop and ended up stripping the whole rear lower section of the bike !
Good news all seams good, but nothing short of a good clean and de-greasing
So while its all in bit's i may look into bracing the swingarm aswell, i guess there's no better time :D

Thanks for looking Dave

Well i was going to go mad on my VTR, but got to much on the go, and i've just been informed i'm paying for a hoilday !! :?
So i'm just going to get her back together and run her as is

I have had a few things done thou:
New bearings in the shocker linkage and the grease nipple mod
Polished the hangers and the god awful red levers
Swingarm has been braced with new rear brake arm (Early blade)
CBR600 rear hugger

Thanks Timbo

The front wheel in the pic, is a gloss black VFR750 one, which i've now sold on . . . (you know who you are) :)
So the OE polished 3 spoke is now back on

The CBR hugger over hangs the brace about 1/4 of an inch, so i need to make a bracket to secure it properly

I've found some great metal polish by meguiars called NXT
It's not as harsh as Autosol and leaves some sort of protective coating, Halfords stock it to

It's looking very good Dave :!: 8) It's a pity you have to cut your project short, especially when you've now got your pic's a half descent size  but it's important to keep the other half happy

Looks like i'm busted 8)

That swingarm does look good might have to drop all my bits off at your house as you seem quite handy with the old polishing wheel.

Well i'm going to attempt to fit my converted 'Chimp' manual CCT's this weekend
I've pretty much coped these from other users pictures etc
Using a 10mm pitch coach bolt (150mm long) and drilling and tapping the cct body
There's an engineers supply shop close to work, were i picked up some stainless dome nut's and some great little washers with a built in rubber seal, hopefully these will seal the common rear cct leakage on the Apes
Dave

The sealing washers aren't that good to be honest :biggrin

Your bike is looking good to me Dave :!: 8) 8) The swingarm looks the dogs :!: it's amazing how much different that brace makes in looks alone. I know some don't like that little nose cone/small bellypan thing, but I think your bike looks better with one fitted than without it. I'm also glad you kept the Castrol paint/decal scheme, because I like it :D

Are the wheels and braced arm lacquered or polished only :?:

Chris.

PS. If the sealing washers aren't that good, use a little clear silicone sealer on the threads, I find that works a treat.
