Starter Motor rebuild - Needle bearing not fitting

Post by martygrohl »

Hey,

I've been working on the starter motor for a bit.
Took it apart and used a rebuild kit to renew bushes and seals.
The only issue I came up against however was the needle bearing that sits on the drive rod on the bottom plate (inside).
This needle bearing should be a HK1312 I believe from what I read (and removed previously).
But a new exact replacement doesn't fit. It gets over the cog end, but doesn't seat down on the rod properly.
I ended up reusing the original which was partly mangled but still rotated and seated proper enough.

I ordered another HK1312 just to double check with the one I got in the rebuild kit. I also got a HK1412 to check the next size up, this one is too big rightly enough.

I just can't seat the correct size properly, I'm not sure if it's meant to be properly hammered on or not. Don't want to wreck anything.
Anyone had the same experience and know the exact bearing needed/how much effort is required to fit a new one?

Does the bearing fit in the end cap, i.e. is the OD correct? When I rebuilt mine I didn't replace the bearing but I don't remember having any issue fitting the cover over the shaft.

Never bothered with rebuild.

Just get a replacement off E-bay off CBR 900 or Blackbird. Most IL4 Honda's use the same starter as the Storm. The main difference is they are mounted on the rear of the engine so don't get all the road crap on them.

STARTER MOTOR ASSY. 31200-MAT-003

Obviously the cable will be different & that is a big issue as they tend to corrode up the cable from the starter end causing resistance.

I stripped one down once, it was black about 18'' from the end...

Thing is it's one of the parts that's discontinued now...

Just a thought/wonder if this new replacement would work as it's cheap as chips (or similar UK sourced one).

I would give it a punt if my starter motor broke :)

Any specialist suit electrician will be able to make a replacement cable. You need very heavy duty crimp pliers to fix the terminals on without loss of performance.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

I have looked far & wide but cant find the relay end L shaped fixing.

Short of having them made...£'s expensive.
