R1 shock fitted with pics
R1 shock fitted with pics
Right I had the idea to change the rear shock on the vtr .I had a R1 shock sitting about that's almost new its off a 99 R1 . The main problem was the shock length so I measured from a static point on the frame with a point on the swing arm and found the differences with both shocks fitted . I had a rear shock mount off a zx9r c2 which fitted the top of the R1 shock this was placed on the R1 and I then had to cut off a couple of mm of the zx9 shock mount and this then fitted ,I had to file off some metal from the inside of the vtr swing arm on the inside were the shock runs as on full load it just touched the R1 spring this was minimal amount to file off . I then tapped out the zx9 top mount and then fitted the shock and mount to the bike using a long bolt to go though the existing hole in the frame to put the bolt and it went into the tapped out top mount this all works fine and is solid . I now have a fully adjustable rear shock fitted and it feels so much more planted
PS sorry its a bit long winded but here is some pics

mmmm that looks like an interesting solution to getting a shock in from another bike? whats it ride like or have you tried it yet?
the older i get,the faster i was

If this works and its a better shock it would be worth getting some top mounts made rather than tapping the ZX9 one out

this is true ,but not got anyone to make up the parts this works so I am happy and it looks cool

ive not been for a long ride yet but much better feel as the vrt one was either to soft or to hard and with the R1 shock you can adjust the rebound and compression
Re: R1 shock fitted with pics
forgot to say I did need to cut the battery box a little bit the bit that goes along the bottom of the box battery still fits the box no problem it just touched the bottle on the shock . I also added the 8mm spacer to the overhaul height of the shock mount when I measured and cut it to keep the same ride height as I had before
Re: R1 shock fitted with pics
can i just ask, the zx9 shock mount was it not long enuf before you cut it to reach the storms frame once you had the shock mounted at the bottom?
the older i get,the faster i was
Re: R1 shock fitted with pics
yes it did fit but it was to high lifted the rear to much . i just used the nut on the zx9 shock mount to spread the load on the underneath of the framefabiostar wrote:can i just ask, the zx9 shock mount was it not long enuf before you cut it to reach the storms frame once you had the shock mounted at the bottom?
ps : the zx9 mount wasn't long enough to go all the way though the frame if that's wot you was asking . there may be a better way of doing the top mount ie having one made up but this didn't cost me a penny to do

That's gold mate!
I have a braced swinger and have wished for a better rear shock for a long time!
Having some other bikes in the Man Cave has held me back from making the investment for a better back shock in the VTR.
Me thinks a visit to the bike wreckers is on the bucket list.
I wonder if there are other worthy shocks from bikes that would fit?
For now this appears to be the most viable alternative.
Great work!
Well done and thanks for the heads up mate.

my next move is fitting the fireblade brace already cut of and ready to fit just got to leave a section open so the r1's reservoir doesn't touch
looked at some other shocks 1000rr but the bottle sticks out and would need the battery box removing altogether R6 may be ok

As others have stated, good on you for having a go at this. We're kind of cursed for simple shock swaps due to the unique length of the standard piece.
Having looked up the specs on an R1 shock on the Racetech website, the standard spring rate seems to be 8kg/mm, whereas the standard spring rate for the VTR is exactly double this at 16kg/m3. I know the bikes are within a few kg of each other for weight so I would guess that the difference between the two is down to linkage rates and the shock stroke.
Have you looked at the static and rider sag figures that you getting? Care to comment on whether the shock is bottoming out on bumps?

Ive started a thread too called "Whats in a name" iam really struggling with yours ! what made you think of such an original name
good work on the shock too.
missing the noise, not the vibes. However never say never!

Linkage ratio will be different. Shock stroke could be out as well. I would like to see the static and rider sag numbers.Cadbury64 wrote:As others have stated, good on you for having a go at this. We're kind of cursed for simple shock swaps due to the unique length of the standard piece.

Also the top mount is a good idea for a stop gap but long term I would like to see it made stronger. It would be interesting to cycle it through its stroke without the spring on to see whats going on.
Re: R1 shock fitted with pics
I too was wondering about the spring rate.
