No HDMI if you still required that spec

Top man Wicky well spotted

I have been looking into this and from what I have read online it appears using a DVI connection lead will be just as good as a HDMI lead. If you think different please put me straight. My graphics card will take either.

The only thing I'm not 100% clear on is, they say DVI doesn't support audio. Does this mean if I purchased a monitor (not the Dell Ultrasharp) with built in speakers they wouldn't work?

Difference between HDMI and DVI is mostly that HDMI has a greater channel bandwidth and so carries audio along with the original image, the difference in image quality is minimal if there actually is one.

And to answer your question, I'm pretty sure you're correct

Thanks for that info Virt :D

I must admit I would prefer to stick with the HDMI lead as I previously said, it just seems quite a few different monitors I have been looking at only have DVI input.

How are your planning for the speaker set up to connect in your scheme?

Are you planning to use it as home entertainment system (movies, audio player games), as well as a computer monitor for PSD.

What graphics card are you using - are you upgrading it for the new monitor?

You're getting to technical for me now Wicky

Let me explain what my plans are. My desktop PC is old and if I was in a position to replace it I would, but I'm not right now.

I was using a 24" Samsung monitor that was on loan to me, but has now gone back. So I am back to using my old Dell 17" monitor right now. It seems shockingly small after the 24" Samsung monitor 8O

The main use (other than surfing the net) for my PC is going to be using Photoshop as I'm into photography. The 24" monitor was very good for doing that with. My graphics card is a Nvidia GeForce GT 210 1GB PCI-Express HDMI

No it won't be used as a Home Entertainment System.

The sound system I intend to carry on using is a 2.1 sub-woofer set-up (2 speakers and 1 sub-woofer) that plugs into the back of the PC (the motherboard I presume) via a jack plug.

Just turn the speakers down on the monitor and turn up the sub/whatever setup. There's probably a setting on the monitor to disable the speakers too.

I use a 22 + 2 19's at work. Much better than one big monitor :).

Cheers Wicky for those suggestions  although I really want to stick with the 1920 X 1200 resolution, as from what I gather is better for a 24" monitor.

Cheers Xenocide for your reply, what I was hoping if I should end up with a monitor with built in speakers :)

Why not get the same monitor you had on loan?

Yes you're right Wicky as 1920 X 1080 resolution seems to be the popular size right now, is it something to do with the 16.9 TV size aspect ratio :?:

As for getting one like I had, you've sussed me out, I am keeping my eye out for one  as well as reading up on the others. I'll let you know what happens when it does :)

Hi ... Dont know if you have aquired your desktop monitor
yet.... but I casually paged through one of my " go to " IT
sites and not before very long I came accross
several monitors that would do you very nicely  ...

I am not connected with this company nor wish to extoll the merits
of buying from them ... but in the past they have been top draw for me.

Cheers for the link to ebuyer, I did try them when I was looking as it happens. The monitor I now have is as in the link I posted in my previous post
