Jim,
I was up against the same thing (well 6K) plus my Storm for a new 999 a good number of years ago. Even though the Ducati was doing almost everything slightly better than my Storm I felt it was not doing it 6K better, not even close :biggrin

Good point that Chris and I agree 100%.

I can only comment on riding the KTM, which was superb and throughly enjoyable, I can't see how it's 4-5 thousand quid better than the SP1. Different bikes completley but I certainly couldn't warrant spending that money for the difference/benefits gained.

It was a hoot though

I too take Jims approach-ride as many different things as you can, it makes you appreciate things more

Yep, the SP and Storm are great value for money in differing ways. I just wish the 999 was cheaper to maintain, the new range are on a par with the Jap maint prices hence the renewed interest. Chris the 999 is quite an affordable proposition due to the marmite looks (I like em by the way)

I fully agree with that too JB

Jim,
Yes, you're right the 999 is much more of an affordable proposition now than it was back then. I don't mind the 999 looks either, but must admit the 1098 of 1198 do look the business IMHO.

The SP's (again IMHO) do have a much better set-up with the gears driven cams. I like to do all my own servicing and work on my bikes, so I know the jobs are down properly for one. That wouldn't be possible with the belt driven cam's on the Ducati's without specialists equipment.

There are quite a few about at good money atm. Even the S model with the fabcy bits.

Got to admit-they are very marmite-but I like them too. Didn't when they came out initially but they have defo grown on me. Again, it's the servicing that kills it for me with most Ducs.

£360 for the big three year service on the 1098 at the dealers ! That to me is a good price. It would be at least that for the valve clearance service on a Honda.

Jim,
I don't suppose that's too bad a price in todays market.

I did a little search and found my write-up on the two Ducati's I test rode. I was totally shocked to see that was in June 2005 8O 8O

Here it is, my opinion is the 10th post down:-

Come and have a go on my Bonneville, you may notice a slight difference between a standard one and mine :D

ad I can point you in the direction of all the shiney part shops as well

and yes, the front brake is Shite!!!!!
What have you played with over the std? Rearsets? Obviously your pipes are non std but what else? :D
Where do I start!!!!!

I have completely reconfigured the carburation with larger jets different throttle needles polished the intake tracks to remove all the rough castings etc.
Modified the airbox by opening up the intake section and removing the baffle plate within the air box.
Open pipes.
Procom ignition advancer which also raises the rev limit from 7500 to 8400 rpm.
The suspension has been sorted with hagon progressive springs and heavier oil to firm it up and take all the "soggyness" out of it.
The rear shocks have been changed for 25mm longer Koni's
150 section rear tyre
Raask Rear sets
Larger front sprocket
Chrome engine casings
Changed the handle bars for lower ones as the standard ones make you sit up way too high.
Goodridge brake hoses (but still shite!!)
Shortened front and rear mudgaurds

Plus loads of other general tnkering and setting up stuff. Out the crate the bonnevilles are circa 58 BHP at the rear wheel, mine so far is up to 71 with some very simple modifications and it makes it a far more useable bike (and alot more fun). You can go on as there is a 998 cc conversion and 39mm flat slide carbs with some head work by Bob farnham tuning could take it up to 80+ and the engine is still reliable as it so over engineered.

Go buy one :D :D :D

Nice to know they still cant make a set of mirrors  You have to look under your arms on the 848/1098/1198 and in certain gears the vibs make them useless.......bit dodgy when riding a 170bhp superbike.......was that a copper?.......***k it I cant even tell and hes right behind me!

Jim,
Someone recently was telling me there is a little screw that is accessible through the plastic (with a screwdriver) under the mirror body. This is apparently there to tighten them up so the vibes don't make them move once adjusted.

But yes I agree, even if they didn't move they're still very much for show only.
