Rectifier

Post by siggy »

Hi All

my rectifier burnt out the other day and left me stranded.
Luckily I wasn't too far away from home and my wife came through with the car. We jump started the bike & I got home without incident.

Anyway, after looking around on the net for some info I can across this site, which swaps the crap Honda r/r for an R1 r/r unit:

http://www.vlc.com.au/~justin/about/bik ... place.html

Just thought it might interest some :o)

The link 'how to know if your r/r is about to die' is also good & mentions why putting a PC cooling fan over the recifier (which I'd done by the way) is of no use!

Cheers

One other bonus is that the honda rectifier is approx £142
whereas the R1 rectifier is £53.

Prices from local Honda & Yamaha dealers.

That is if you want to go for new manufacturer parts and not buy pattern or second hand parts of course.

The Honda R/Rs are actually all made by Shindengen, who make some that are heaps better than the piddly thing fitted as standard to the VTR. For some reason, if you can buy them elsewhere, they also cost less! My heavy-duty one cost me $NZ300 (approx 100 pooondz), and the previous one I bought (for my VFR) was about $NZ225.

Here are some details and pix for anyone who's interested:

Hope this helps someone. :)

The R1 / R6 replacement is:

Regulator/Rectifier (#718807)
Price: £39.95
5 Pins SH650A-12

The product number SH.... could be for shindengen (I guess seems like the same format on the orig VTR r/r). The one in you pic's looks exactly like the R1 r/r :o)

Last message on this subject.

Got an R6 r/r off ebay -> £16.50.
Fitted as per the site I mentioned in my first mail -> 5 minutes.
Tested the voltage -> spot on.
Went for a ride in blazing sunshine, helmsley, pickering, whitby, home ->smiles.

Job done with a £125 saving.
I love the internet :D
