Slow turning over, VERY corroded starter connections

Hi all,
I need to sort this quickly but worried about forcing the wrong nut.
Basically the thread that comes out from the starter is corroded to mush including the final retaining nut, so badly that I can't make out any of it.
Does the whole thread unscrew from the starter body allowing me to replace it, or will I have to somehow hold the (non) threaded shaft and try to remove the wire retaining nut as a seperate item. I'm hoping the former, gulp.

Slap in a second-hand starter motor if water has gotten into the starter past the seal - it's knackered - keep the connection under the rubberhood greased up to keep corrosion at bay - to give you more options Blackbird ones and CBR900s from late 90s /early naughties fit the same.

However you can fiddle with a making a replacement bolt > see this thread http://www.vtr1000.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=24777
you can make your own replacement with a coach bolt with its head filed down to replicate the Honda part. make sure you put all the insulation parts in the correct place.

the bolt is fixed in the starter body.

Mine was the same, and I couldnt get a socket on the rusted mush that was the nut. so I took a jounior hacksaw and cut down the center of the bolt untill I had also cut the rusty nut and its captive washer in half. Once the nut was off, the threads of the bolt were actually OK, so I took all the wires and insulating shims out and cleaned them. After greasing and refitting I put a new stainless nut & washer back on and didnt need to replace the bolt.

see if that works for you, if not you will have to remove the bolt which needs you to remove the starter and make up a new bolt using a coach bolt cut down to fit.

I think I'll try the hacksaw route first and then if I have to take the starter off anyway I may as well get the blackbird one on ebay, looks tidy.

. . . right, I'm getting cocky now.
starter's off so I thought I'd dismantle it and as a result of all the mechanism NOT springing out all over the place, I'm off to B&Q for a replacement bolt !!

ps I've never opened up any form of motor before :confused

woo-hoo !! She's ALIVE !!
So, it all came apart lovely like and I "found" a random large spanned round screw headed bolt in the Q. The importance of the large span was that I cut a slice off the head which enabled the new bolt to sit in the starter casing without rotating when tightening it up.
All in all the starter is now back in situ and turning faster than Nick Clegg on tuition fees, and is covered in more grease than my hair when I was 13.
So thank you all for giving me the advice and confidence to do this free fix.

Last winter I had the usual symptoms of the rusty connection on the starter.

In general I don't have problems starting but it's niggling me that the starter bolt is all rusted and not as efficient as it could be!

I came across this thread with regards to opening up the starter, removing the bolt and replacing it with a new bolt.

My question before I start this is, will it be obvious how to remove this bolt once the starter is dismantled?? :-)

if you can get the top nut of there would be no need to replace the bolt .

if it comes off easy just give the bolt a good clean up with a wire brush and the starter cable , fit a new nut and cover in hi temp grease also fill up the rubber boot with grease clip it back over and remove the excess grease .

i haven't taken a starter motor to bits before so can't advise on that :oops:
