Re: The RD400 drag bike
So an update on the saga…. I found a source for genuine Yamaha crank seals and got them ordered, but the hunt for std size pistons wasnt going so well. Talking to PJ Motorcycle engineering (2 stroke rebores and cranks building experts), they advised that the only source of std size DT175 pistons the...

Re: The RD400 drag bike
Oh and while I am commenting on bodges that I keep finding, here is a good one.
When I took the LH piston off, there was 2 circlips fitted on the inner side of the small end!!
That was a timebomb waiting to wreck the bore when it worked its way out

Re: The RD400 drag bike
Back in bits again waiting for the new seals IMG_5030.jpeg As I have a few days to wait i had a more detailed look at the crankcases. I had spotted that there are a couple of the M6 crankcase threads near the back of the gearbox are starting to fail, so I will drill and helicoil them. More interesti...

Re: N + 1 Again.
Some nice bits on it (well if i hide my eyes from the blue anodised tat), so it not a bad addition.
What the plan for it? Sell off the good bits then flog it as a std bike, or just de-tat it and sell?

Re: The RD400 drag bike
No time wasting there Al  Well that might not be true! I posted the same photos on the RD forum and one of the guys spotted the oil seal on the clutch side of the crank is fitted the wrong way round in my disassemby photos (the castellated part should face the bearing aparantly. I obviousl...

Re: The RD400 drag bike
Today I stripped the bottom end, washed the crank and both top and bottom cases to get rid of the rest of the broken piston bits. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20240315/2f30e67d39190108be620d372874f53d.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20240315/2a13bd6734430074f505aebcc1d2068f.jpg https://uplo...

Re: The RD400 drag bike
Yes it’s over bored to get it up to 436cc apparently.
Have tracked the model & year of the 2A7 piston to 1977 `DT175 .
Think the are std size, so just need to establish the best aftermarket option for good quality

Re: The RD400 drag bike
Oh that’s a shame Al, my RD400 had a partial seizure last time out, but I haven’t investigated it yet. However there is a guy called Mally on the RD400 forum hat had issues similar to mine and it turned out to be aftermarket pistons that expanded too much as it was poor quality. So if you find the ...

Re: The RD400 drag bike
Well that’s a huge step backwards! With the 1st drag outing less than a month away, I thought i would start her up, get her up to temperature and make sure all the basics are still working. After wam up, did a couple of hard starts from about 3 to 4000 revs just to see it it wheelies or spins (it sp...

Re: The RD400 drag bike
Chaingaurd is required as part of the regulations for the straightliners organised drag events. Looking at the one on my firestorm, i thought it could be a good starting point to fit the RDs braced and extended swing arm, so I contacted Frank & Mac inc, and got a spare one. Some Dremel cuts a ta...
