Look at the wiring around the headstock as there is a known problem there where the wiring goes through a clamp and rubs through insulation causing a short, which tbh sounds very like the sort of problem you are having. I would not expect a side stand switch to cuase those sort of problems.

I was wondering if the wavey style brake discs actually do anything to improve the braking or is it all purely for looks?

Seen some cheap and wondering if its worht the bother.

Voltages sound ok to me, much the same as every bike I have ever owned in fact. Put your meter to the AC volts range and see what you get then, any significant ac volts say over about 1v will destroy the battery in qucik time.
