fuel warning light

Hi
sorry if this has been asked before, ive searched the forum and I couldn't find the answer I was looking for,the low fuel warning light, does it light up when the ignition is turned on like a self test of the bulb or not or is shorting it out the only way of checking it works.
regards
Sean
