Re: Removing very corroded fork seal
Thanks for the info, guys I'll try digging out what I can of the seal and get some more penetrating oil in there and leave it a bit longer. If I can manage to get out most of the rubber part of the seal it will hopefully have less holding it in there. I don't have a spare fork leg or a press but I h...

Removing very corroded fork seal
Hi All Hoping someone may have some tips for removing a fork seal from a '97 VTR. The bike hadn't been used for many years and I'm slowly working over it to make it into another track bike. The fork dust seals had completely perished and the metal bits of the seals themselves are badly corroded. The...

Re: silly question
Ive used a gear lever from the spare rear-set bits I got with a CBR300 track bike (sh!tloads of fun) 'cos the original had a really worn bush and I kept missing changes. The lever I have on it now has ball bearings and takes all the slop out of the linkage. Since i did that I've had bugger all misse...

Forgot to mention these offset the pegs by 25mm. They're also available with 40mm offset

Re: silly question
I got these off eBay for about $70 (Aus). They are multi adjustable and nicely made. Got them to raise the footpegs so I don't scrape the pegs at the track, but they can easily be adjusted so the footpeg is lower. Was looking for rearsets but found these and very easy to install. https://i.postimg.c...

Re: First start in 10 years
Problem solved...now running on 2 :) After taking the carbs off and pulling them apart again it turned out to be a blocked fuel filter in one of the lines in the external fuel tank I had set up. Yesterday when I tried to get it running it was the rear cylinder that wouldn't fire; today it was the fr...

Re: First start in 10 years
Thanks Tony Yes, there was fuel in both float bowls and I have a little fuel tank rigged up so no vacuum needed. I forgot to mention that I had previously checked the compressions and they were the same on both cylinders - about 160psi (after I'd squirted a bit of oil down the bore so it wouldn't be...

Re: First start in 10 years
<r>Hi All<br/> I'm having a bit of trouble getting a '97 Storm running that hasn't been run since at least 2017. <br/> It came with a set of later carbs that were nice and clean inside and out. I put new jets, o-rings and gaskets in making sure I had the right ones in the right carbs and set the pil...

Re: carb type VPT0B vs VPT3A for a '97 VTR
Thanks Chris Apologies for belated reply but been away for the last month. Have also had info from a local forum suggesting all the carbs are essentially the same and can be swapped between years. Anyway, the kit I bought here from an Australian company had the A1UF and A1UE Jet needles so may need ...

Re: Removing choke.
Yep, I agree about leaving the chokes as is. Even in sunny Darwin (30ºC most days) I need a bit of choke to get my VTR started.

Re: Happy birthday RodneyT
Just saw this now... Thanks guys. Yes, I did have a good birthday - got a project VTR!! Needs a far bit of work as it's not been running for 6 years at least and been stored uncovered with tank and fairings off so you can imagine how filthy it is. I've been doing lots of reading and researching on t...

carb type VPT0B vs VPT3A for a '97 VTR
Hi All About to tackle the carbs on my project '97 VTR. I got 2 sets with the bike: a dismantled, cruddy set of VPT0Bs, which I believe are the correct type for '97, and an assembled, very clean set of VPT3As all wrapped up in cloth which I believe are from the later models with the PAIR valving. I'...

Re: removing stuck alternator cover centre bolt
Have now refurbished and fitted both caps and I tightened them by putting bolts into the threaded holes in the caps and using a small screwdriver between the bolts. I could feel the o-ring squashing and then it went solid so I'm guessing there's a shoulder the cap comes up against to avoid squashing...

removing stuck alternator cover centre bolt
Apologies if there's already several threads on this topic but I couldn't find them while searching. I know I've read about problems with this but can't find the topic. Anyway, I had a bit of a win today with both my VTRs as both had resisted all attempts to remove said bolt/cap (whatever it's calle...
