Re: RamAir Filtres

As everyone says, back away, big headaches will come your way. Fitting pod filters equals no airfilter at all as far as operation goes. If I went down this road (and I guess I have before), leave the pilots alone, get some HRC needles (unobtanium), 165 (aprox) main jets and block the main airbleeds....

Re: Float heights, what is not considered.

Just to add to the above post, the carb floats sit with the lower 13mm of the float submerged, if you were wondering? :-)

Emulsion tubes, how & when they work.

(EDITED) The emulsion tube, sometimes called 'needle jet', and it is in some carbs (twostroke Mikuni's mostly) but on the Firestorm the actual needle-jet is pressed into the carb body above the emulsion tube, its inside diameter works hand in hand with the needle diameter. The emulsion tube (the mai...

Re: Carb slides, 1 hole or 3 ..... an explanation.

Hmmm, thanks for your reply. What does YMMY mean? What makes you say the aftermarket stacks are "tuned like the long stacks", do you say that just because of the slide hole requirement? Just so you know, I was working for the Australian arm of HRC when the Firestorm was released (I had fra...

Float heights, what is not considered.

The height of the fuel in the Firestorm float-bowl effects carburation during the transition from pilot-jet to needle-jet (emulsion tube). Basic studies on how carburettors work (car or bike) confirm this. Some Firestorm riders complain of a lean situation around that area (about 4000 rpm). Now, sit...

Re: Carb slides, 1 hole or 3 ..... an explanation.

Like most, when talking about the single lift hole one important bit seems to be overlooked by most. The single lift hole is ONLY to be used with the short stack. Running both carbs (with stock stacks) with a single lift hole will not work (and was never recommended.) Also if you run something like...

Carb slides, 1 hole or 3 ..... an explanation.

Well I've been working on the bikes carburation, nothing new for a Firestorm owner that likes to tinker but, after wearing out 3 sets of VTR carbs over the years, I have learnt something that I must share with you Guy's. I know there are many varied carb set-up combinations that seem to work for man...

Re: Anyone swapped the Storm 'box for an SP one?

Yep fitted the box, bloody love it ! I had to make a couple of mods..... 1) The clutch end of the mainshaft has to be ground down 2mm (the RC51 box shaft is 3mm longer on that end). 2) A spacer washer is needed under the original clutch hub nut & washer. 3) I ground down most of the original clu...

Re: Change in emulsion tubes after 2001?

With regard needles, pre 2001 Australia models ran A1UC & A1UD, after 2001 they changed to A1UE & A1UF. I was working for Honda Australia in '97 when the VTR's were released, I saw on our parts lists that some European models ran A1UB's in both cylinders, I realized (don't ask me how) that t...

Re: Change in emulsion tubes after 2001?

Ah sorry guys, missed the updates on the thread. The -D41's has a larger bottom bleed hole of the lower three (closest to the thread. The -640's run all .8mm bleed holes, the -D41's have a .9mm bottom hole. A touch leaner later in the fuel curve, not sure where, I don't know what rpm the bike is at ...

Re: Lean condition 2000 to 4000 rpm

Something to watch out for is the likelihood of ovality in the needle jets. These bikes are getting old now, and a large bore means high pressure changes in the carb throats as the inlet valves open and close, moving the needle into frictional contact with the jet. Good point Tony, l'll pay close a...

Re: Lean condition 2000 to 4000 rpm

Hey Guy's :-) Sorry to drag this up after so long (but I have now some info), I can't message anyone yet, I have not enough posts. The issue of the OP can be cured by adjusting the float height (yeh I know they are not adjustable ha ha), let me start by discussing the problem with the VTR, both carb...
