Re: Diversion to Firestorm

Welcome, if I can say that as a noobie as well. Bought my Storm Oct 2017 to replace my Commando due to be sold. Yes I miss the old girl after 20 yes but the Storm is a whole lot more fun. On mileage, if you ride like I do and don't squirt it all the time 48 mpg is my usual. 150 miles and I fill up. ...

Re: What's annoyed you today??

Carbs reseated and checked for blockages. Plugs swopped and pulled the intake cam gear off and played around with different posns. Checked all connectors. Still running rough but it it's like bad carb balance which I know it's not and the idle screws are as removed. Next stop is the front pot to che...

Re: What's annoyed you today??

Yes will try other plugs although current iridiums have std gaps. All vacuum pipes fit tight but you're right about the carbs seating. I managed it OK when I did the mccts but I'm wondering with the odd intake noise and the fact it runs but won't idle smoothly without idle screw turned up. I did not...

Re: What's annoyed you today??

Cheers, will do all that. While cam timing looks good the marks don't align perfectly so that was driving me nuts. Still, moving the gear wheels a tooth either way makes too big a difference. I can see from searches others have had similar issues. I even doubted the fuel, a couple of months old out ...

Re: What's annoyed you today??

Comp tester adaptor arrived. 150 psi cold with butterflies and slides open. Same on front. Carbs off and jets removed and compressed air thru all holes. Diaphragms all good. Float bowls were full when drained. Carbs seated properly as far as i could see and cam timing marks all line up. Idle screws ...

Re: What's annoyed you today??

Thanks for that. Trouble is the older you get the more care you need to take and shortcuts ain't the way....mostly I've learned this but not always. Checked valve clearances and bang on as I did them. It runs on the rear just not well. Tried a plug in each pot and when cranked it sounds slightly dif...

Re: What's annoyed you today??

That's a good point. However I did the clearances last as I was waiting on shims....any damage would have happened before while I was faffing with the crank shells and chains. I think the valve springs took the crank round a 1/4 turn with both pistons up. Still will check it. The reshim was only in ...

Re: What's annoyed you today??

Got the motor in and bits attached for a fire up after doing the mainshaft bearing and crank shells. Great news the gearbox is quiet as it can be... Not so good is the iffy running on rear pot....thinking I may have clipped a valve when pushing pistons up and down to do shells and the rotating crank...

Scissor gears assy

Can't find the answer anywhere so would appreciate anyone's opinion/knowledge. Bottom end now assembled and while checking clutch and drive gear I realised I'd not noted the scissor gear to drive gear position when I stripped it. There are 3 positions it goes in... In one the teeth align and it's a ...

Re: Lightened Flywheel - what's involved?

Good point. I've always used top on old Brit bikes for years undoing crank pulleys and clutch drums. First gives more advantage from engine end so its easier to force rear wheel round. In top with less mechanical force a braked back wheel does a better job. I had to think about tha because old Briti...

Re: Lightened Flywheel - what's involved?

Well I realise the holding tool is best but I was planning to torque it with gearbox in top and brake on! Definitely wouldn't use a gun. Don't see a problem with steady torque as its tightened. Impact torque no. Still pissing around with valve timing and clearances. I will get it back together by Xm...

Re: Lightened Flywheel - what's involved?

Mines in bits for gearbox brgs. so I used an Iveco truck stud to push off and a windy gun to undo the bolt. In Fleet if you have no-one closer.

Re: Main and rod brg grades

Thanks for that. I'm overthinking it as I usually do! I've ordered what was fitted as the journals look good and difficult to get an accurate thickness on the shells. Managed to slide out the top case mains by loosening the mccts and lifting the crank. Works a treat and they go back OK.

Re: Main and rod brg grades

Well all journals plastigaged and rods seem OK and within limits at an avg 0.0016" but the mains are over the nominal limit at 0.002" although within service limit. I don't have any oil pressure issues I know about but without a gauge who knows? I have yellow and brown shells so can reduce...
