Front brake line ‘Race’ set up

Post by Donut 77 »

Hi, I have new lines to do this. Would appreciate any pics/suggestions for those who have done this before. Which bits of the old mountings did you use if any. Which route did you run? Where to clamp the hoses?

So far as a start point, all I have is that the dbl banjo is at the M/C and one of these is the straight banjo. I’m guessing that the left calliper has the slightly longer line.

Is it a case of making up your own brackets/several tie-wraps?

One or two crush washers between the dbl banjos?

Cheers

For the double length banjo bolt there needs to be 3 copper washers, one ate each end and one between the 2 hose banjos.

Yes the long hose will go to the left brake caliper.

Set it up however works for your bike. Most likely longer line to the left but routing makes a difference. Crush washers are one between each line and the m/c and bolt, so just three. If the bolt doesn't nip the washers up when you tighten by hand don't force it, buy deeper washers. Basically, don't over think it you'll work it out.

Thanks all. I’m getting an idea what to do now.

Why do they always supply one out of 4 banjos with a straight end? To my mind, if this is for the dbl banjo then it looks a bit odd having one straight and one bent. It does work with both bent - at least then they follow the same pathway.

Buy your lines made up to your specification instead of off the shelf. That way, you get what you want, not what they have in stock.

Yes I would do this, in fact I did send the rear one back as they had used the opposite handed banjo to the OEM set up, and it just didn’t work.. I naively thought that a kit specific to the bike would be correct..

Can't remember the make off hand but one mnfr always fits swivels, which helps.

"Venhill" is one manufacturer that does have swivel ends,

Ended up going with Mac’s P-clip suggestion 👍. Using the shorter line over to the left to get a better curve. Hope it helps others. My kit was the OHA and I was able to rotate one of the banjos (as the manufacturer suggested)

Biggest problem is the horn bracket. I have seen one where they drilled a 15mm hole in this with a grommet to put one of the lines through it.

You need a 2nd p-clip on the otherside for the righthand line.

I thought about that and I might still, but I tried to let them largely sit where the curve took them. Adding another clip would pull them over a bit. I’m assuming I don’t have to clamp it there for MOT?

Looking good

The only thing you need to do if not done already?
Is extend the forks fully (front wheel off the ground) just to make sure there is no tension on the new brake lines, you don’t want to pull a wheelie and find you have no brakes :eh:

Thanks. I did end up adding the second P-Clip and adapting the horn bracket. Yes I did try the full range of movement and all seems ok 👍

I wish I could pull a wheelie 😆
