can any of the tubing going through air box etc be removed as some of it must just be for emissions it would make things simpler?

Yes, you can remove all of the pipes inside the airbox to increase the airbox volume. These are engine breathers, one from each head, so you could run pipes external to the airbox and tee them into a filter bottle. I did this and dyno'd the bike before and after, it made no discernible difference to power, actually losing .5 bhp.
I also removed the triangular housings which hold the filters ensuring that air flowing into the carbs above the slides, and blanked off those corners, so further increasing volume.

I expected a better result, but sadly, no.

Probably best to leave it alone.
