Went out today and after 5 miles the clutch started to slip. Within a minute or two no drive at all. Same thing hot or cold, question does a clutch fail so quickly, and could it be something else ?, Thanks for any help

What kind of oil are you using, fully synthetic or semi?

Semi , 10/40. Haven't done a recent oil change ,

Most odd as it's usually fully synthetic oil causes slip. Sounds like you'll have to delve deeper and see what's going on with the plates.

Had the bike been sitting a while? When were the plates last changed? When was the oil last changed? Any issues with any of the gears? Have you put any sort of additive in the oil such as auto restore or similar as these are not designed for engines that share engine and clutch oil as causes the clutch to slip due to anti friction properties.

Normally going on NO, a clutch shouldn't normally fail that quickly.

Could it be a stuck push rod? What's the gear change like, if you put it in 1st slowly release clutch lever does it stall?

so the clutch is always lifted then. id check the pushrod cause it must be holding the clutch lifted, as in as if you have the clutch lever pulled in. start there and if thats not the problem your gona have to pull the clutch cover of and see why the engine thinks the clutch lever is always pulled in.

If you don't need clutch when its running to put in gear and it doesn't lurch forward and stall then your clutch push rod could be stuck, whip off the cover, remove the clutch push rod and check condition and also how hard it was to remove.

Assuming your clutch lever works as it should and there is fluid then if your push rod is moving freely I would then disassemble the slave cylinder and clean and rebuild.

I'm going for grit in the clutch slave cylinder, preventing the cylinder from retracting.

Removed the slave cylinder this morning all looked good , no leaks , moving freely. The pushrod to the clutch moved about 8mm back and forward. Stripped the clutch out ,all looked good no wear, slipping or burning. Deglazed the metal plates with wet and dry put it back together and the clutch is back. Hurray !!! . Will do an oil change at the weekend just in case. Many thanks for all the help and tips guys .
