Faulty CCT pics if you have them...

Hello, it's been a while. Long story short, needed a second car, swapped my beloved Storm, got ripped off and have (obviously) regretted it ever since. But that's another story or another time!

Anyway, everyone has always been willing to help out in this site so here I am again asking for some of you do it again. I'm in need of some visuals. If at all possible and you have had the misfortune of a failed Honda CCT, could I ask for a picture of the failed unit and area please, i.e. if the spring has gone kaput, a close-up of the failed area please, or even if it's the thread that has stripped within the main/ secondary shaft, that would be helpful too.

As always, I thank you in advance and look forward to your responses.

Hi Bleh, Good to see you back again  sorry you had to let your VTR go.

I was only thinking about you recently, I was wondering if you remember who supplied your VTR rear undertray :?:

Here are a couple of photo's of a failed CCT spring that happened to my bike. I was okay though with the Stopper Mod fitted, I was able to ride the bike home, even though it was making a loud noise from the front failed CCT spring. This one didn't break though where I have seen others break.

Photo's taken from this thread of mine 2013 8O

Stopper mod. Easy. http://www.vtr1000.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=25160

Mine has had the screw part removed and a threaded rod run all the way through to the back of the push rod. So its been converted to a manual.

Thanks Sirch, all the images so far are fantastic.

I'm doing a brief study on the CCT's for an MEng paper which is why I would like images of the broken bits. They will all go towards my analysis section and justifying any areas redesigned.

If you wish to supply me your actual name (via pm), I can accurately reference the images should you wish me to do so?! 5 Months and I should be done with this masters at last, so many more white hairs in my beard than when I started, but on the flip side, I may be able to afford another Storm once I am once again gainfully employed.... Maybe even an SP 8O

There was another guy did this a few years ago. Can't remember his forum name now but he was in the RAF. I'm sure someone else will furnish his details, he used to be a regular on here.

Interesting failure mode. Looks like a crack propogated nearly halfway though the spring before a catastrophic failure. It's been far too many decades since my own studies on on the cross sectional stresses on springs. What do you think Bleh?

This is a very interesting failure indeed. At a location that you wouldn't expect, i.e. 2 turns into the coil. Wicky's failed spring is far more logical and what you'd expect.

I'm currently doing lots of pretty drawings (I hate the CAD part) so I should be able to run some simulations over the next day or two so keep an eye on this post and I will update it with some snazzy (but not to snazzy) images of what work I have done. In regards to the spring itself, I intend on crunching some 'theoretical' numbers, for example, upper and lower possibilities over the next few days.

I don't want to spend to long on this as xmas day looms and my kids wont be impressed with me playing on my laptop then, plus I have another topic I need to concentrate on more, ultimately worth more marks academically... designing and implementing the control system (and the trumpets) for a variable intake - a bit more fun than this stuff for me

Will try and update this post with some parts I've drawn later so you have a scope of what I'm trying to do (if I can remember how)

First time seen the internals of a cct and what were Honda thinking using such a thin coil especially on a Vtwin

Not mine personally - it was a picture nabbed of the inter web.

I 'm still after a broken CCT myself with a failed spring so I can take it to this local specialist spring company to see what they say about it.
