Cheers Chris
Personally I'd do both front and rear tensioners at the same time(after resetting the timing marks for the front one). give the carbs a ballance and everything a quick check over whilst I was there. No point in having to take it all apart twice if you don't have to

Cheers guys, the tank didnt need removing, just the belly pan and the alloy inspection thingy :?: lined marks up nicely, and everything went well. Got to take tank off to do front next week, thats gonna be the hard one. Wish i could've done both, but im still waiting for other tensioner to arrive, i just got a bit ahead a myself :D

CCT and Ratlly noises

Post by mecon »

Yer, I've heard of the cct thingy as well and funnily enuf, my 'storm has a rattle at idle :( BUT, good news :D :D - it's the crutch basket :!: . Try this - iffn the noise goes away when you pull in the clutch it aint gonna be the cct :!: Apparently lots-a-ondas do it. I fink it's done to mask the kkkrunchh of selecting 1st gear, meself :biggrin

And I dont fink outerbalance carbs make the motor rattle - just idle lumpy-like... besides, when I check mine (wiv a vacuum gage, natch  ) they are always appear on the top line.

Oh, and yes, my gas tank is always nearly empty (bluddy long commutes)

Well,I balanced my carbs last week...and guess what?horrible rattly noise has now gone :D
Never used the normal vacuum gauge, got a tool off ebay which was just as effective but only £11.99 inc p+p,just a few bits of tube with ball bearings inside, when the bearings align the carbs are balanced :D very simple but effective.
Still got the burn marks on my hand to prove I balanced em

If you didn't remove the fuel tank then you couldn't have removed the cam cover, so how did you know your engine was on the right stroke?

The same guy has more on ebay, just put in the search word "carb balancer" :D the item number for one of them is 7964253523 and the seller is jjuliangerar. There is only one on there at the moment and it has about 8 hours to go.
I think he makes them himself, the idea is so simple you wouldn't believe it but it really works a treat(especially on a twin)comes complete with plastic adaptors too (and they fit the firestorm)although its a shame the adaptors wern't metal as they are a pain in the ass to pick up if you drop them to the bottom of the block

This is what a local Honda mechanic told me to do......................
1. the timing marks are set by the chain position.
2. it will only move when no tension is on the chain.
3. If the chain dont move the timing stays the same.
4. Set bike to tdc (piston at top) regardless of stroke.
5. wind tensioner in while listening carefully for suden chain movement.
6. lock tool of so tensioner dont shoot back out.
7. slowly remove.
If you hear or suspect the chain has moved, then remove cam cover.
if not, and all went smooth, remove plugs and crank over in sixth to be sure then fire her up!

worked a treat

I personally don't think very much of what your so called "Honda mechanic" told you to do, in fact IMHO a very cowboyish attitude. Its your bike so if you are happy with this persons advice, then thats your choice,
I wish you all the best with front CCT,
Chris.
