When do auto CCTs fail - how many miles

Post by StuartWags »

this is related vtrdazs thread

we are all aware that the CCTs fail .... my question is at approximately what age, what was the earliest new auto CCT failure

I have done approaching 10 failures and these have ranged from 27K to 44K. They are usually mid 30K.

I have ran standard auto ones and treated them as a serviceable item and based on my <5000 miles a year and riding a bike with mid 30K on the clock i kind of think the bike may be passed its best by the time the next CCT is due. I have also fitted manual ones as the cost of replacing the auto ones does not add up anymore

I have not tried the stopper mode yet

It may be that your whole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.

Hello Stuart, Roger Ditchfield was telling me he had one go with very low mileage can't remember the exact mileage he said but it prompted me to get mine changed to manual ones

what would be good is a statistical distribution.
i.e
7K = bloody unlucky
20K = oh bugger, i was expecting better
30K= it was bound to happen eventually
40K = i told you so you muppet
50K = you lucky B@st@rd, it is still running
60K = Liar - nobody will believe you

May be this is a survey type question?

I had changed mine for new standard Honda ones on buying the bike, eighteen months later one of them let go, and I found this forum.
Two bent valves was all, but could easily have been worse.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

How many miles would that be?...

My frankenstorm has a engine i got for £70. No idea what then mileage is on the unit. I serviced it and change the oil regularly. Commute daily, and done 5 track days on, plus ragged it when possible. The clutch rattles ..suggesting in has been about for a bit

The bike has done me proud ... may be i should do the right thing and do the stopper mod at least

Dont get me wrong .... i have changed the CCt on every storm that has been on my patch (except for the frankenstorm) and i wouldnt sell one without out doing so. But I do sometimes wonder what the failure rate is

In Portugal there are few firestorms. But there are lots of Varaderos.

I check the portuguese varadero forum and didn't see the cct issue.

Varaderos with 100 000 miles and don't had the cct problems.

Is there a chance of the cct issue only appears in the firestorm engine?

It might just be me but maybe it is possible that because a Varadero has a center stand. folks don't tend to leave it sit on the side stand to "warm up"?

As for the stock CCT, the replacement interval is 32K miles and the stock units can work pretty good, if looked after .

Yes those are miles and yes I have only run the stock CCTs...... though one of these days I put a set of manuals in but I have another 15K miles or so before I need to address the issue.

Is not the first time i heard that bikes should warm up in a right position.
You let me relieved about the stock CCT.
Congrats about that 100k miles on your bike.

How longs a piece of string

It's a bit like a box of chocolates

My mathematical head tells me the answer to this....

Q: How long is a piece of string?

A: Exactly twice the distance as it is from the middle to one end.
If it ain't broken...f*ck about with it until it is.

I'm not a fan of manual CCT's, but when it comes to a Firestorm you put a set on ASAP.

I can supply manual ccts for £46.00 a pair with traded postage.why take a chance. £46.00 is a lot cheaper than stripping your engine.
