Breather pipes, how many?
Hi all, question on how many breather type pipes there should be hanging down from the engine area. This is how it went---- It's something I had taken much notice of until today. Went out for a run and needed to fill up (as usual ), pulled into the filler station next to the pumps, (not looking at the floor as I pulled in), filled up, went in and paid, came back out, keys in, started her up, gloves on, leg over ( ) don't know why, but looked down, only to see a breather type pipe on the floor just behind my front wheel, so got off and picked it up, looked at the front area, there are 3 pipes hanging down, 2 thicker ones and 1 thinner one, the one I picked was the same size as the thicker ones, basically, is this one of mine or has someone else dropped it off?

Let's see, there's two from the tank, one from the coolant reservoir, er, that's it. I think.....
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.
Re: Breather pipes, how many?
Isn't there also one from the thermostat housing? although IIRC the very early Firestorms only had a hole in the housing with no drain off hose,

1 from front of water pump housing?? Or not?tony.mon wrote:Let's see, there's two from the tank, one from the coolant reservoir, er, that's it. I think.....

Re: Breather pipes, how many?
You're right, early ones had a 90 degree spigot that came off of the front of the crankcases in front of the water pump, and a thin pipe on some bikes runs from that to exit along with the other drains.
Later ones merely have a hole, and nothing dreadful happens, so I take them off earlier bikes; there's no need for them to be there- so that's why I couldn't think of it....

Not....that is an overflow for if the water pump mechanical seal fails.1 from front of water pump housing?? Or not?
3 pipes as Tony said should be hanging down by the gene cover. Have a look under General Information in the workshop manual page 1-22.

Sure mine has 4, as the one from the water pump housing is in a clip above the starter motor and exits by gen covercybercarl wrote:Not....that is an overflow for if the water pump mechanical seal fails.1 from front of water pump housing?? Or not?

if you been out for a run I guess you would need a breather?

Re: Breather pipes, how many?
I also say there is one from the water pump housing, although I called it the thermostat housing in my previous reply. The reason I think there is one there from the mechanical seal is that mine used to weep occasionally down by the other pipes that exit in front of the alternator cover. As I said above, I don't think all years had this pipe. I thought it was the very early ones that only had a hole with no hose, but I see some say different

Re: Breather pipes, how many?
I stand corrected there is indeed a water pump drain on later models. It's in the manual too.
