More CCT's probs

Post by matt1966 »

Hi had my Storm bout 5 weeks now and not being familiar with the sounds of the engine, after trawling through the forum I am pretty sure the front
CCT is noisey not very noisey but defo something there, which seems to quieten when the engine is hot and only there on tick over. I have some manuals on
order from U.S but dont know how long they gonna take to get here. The question is can I still use bike cautiously or order an auto for the time being.

I put a thread in earlier about locking down an auto CCT are there instructions to do this ?
Many Thanks
Matt

Matt,
It's all in the workshop Knowledge base, diagrams, everything you need.
Personally I would say don't ride it, don't even start it, if you think they are on the way out.

I'd have to agree with that.
Two bikes, still only four cylinders!

Hi again just had a look at the cct in question took the top
bolt out and gave a small turn with screwdriver. There seem to
be a healthy amount of tension in the spring. Is this conclusive that
it should be ok for a bit.

Matt, seeing as there's still tension from the spring in your test you carried out (on the front CCT), that means the springs hasn't broken yet. But as you're hearing noises from the front cylinder that you think are related to the CCT, the chances are the spring is loosing it's tension, so most likely going to break soon. Personally I'd stick with Pete's advice and don't run the engine.

You could fit a stopper into the standard CCT's which I've described in the Knowledge base (in the workshop section) for piece of mind until you fit the APE's. However make sure you follow my instructions ("How to remove and refit CCT's on the firestorm") for setting the valve timing first before removing the CCT's.
I put a thread in earlier about locking down an auto CCT are there instructions to do this ?
You can do that with a 6mm bolt, by grinding down the end of the bolt to give a flat very much like a flat bladed screwdriver, but to do that you'll still need to remove the CCT to fit it.

Not sure it is the CCTs now, could just be where its sucking air in the carbs, like I said I am not at all sure what noises are normal on the Storm, hopefully will
be ok till manuals come. Thanks for all the input.

Where are you Matt? There might be somone near by who knows what they are listening to or you could risk taking it to a local garage if you dont think it's the tensioners.

Depending on where you are in Essex I'm only just over the Dartford Crossing near Sevenoaks.
HTH if you want to drop by.

It seems unlikely that you'll get noises from the CCT's if the springs are intact and functioning ok, more likely to be:
1 clutch rattle (normal- goes away/lessens a lot when clutch pulled in) or
2 valve clearances (if you can hear them they probably need doing, but unless it's really loud you'll be ok riding it until you get round to doing them), or
3 that annoying sort of "cough" the engine does when it backfires through the carb into the airbox, usually on tickover but you can also feel it through the tank at lower revs as well. Sometimes causes stalling, balance carbs and it improves but turn up tickover to 14500 or thereabouts and get used to it- doesn't cause any issues.

Apart from those, any noises need investigating!
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.
