what do Ducati 1098 sound like ???

Post by warby221 »

Well actually got out to play today had a run to the barn was very quiet.
Having a chat with a guy who had a bran new Ducati 1098 any way him and his m8 were setting off so he starts up his bike and I’m not kidding it sounded like a bag of spanners
If it were mine it would have been in bits to find out what they’d left in there rattling about
Honest it was that bad
sounded like it was coming from the clutch on it

There's an interesting article here on Ducati's dry clutches:

http://www.rebelpacket.net/maint/clutch_maint.html

Many of their recent models have clutches that sound like that - since I found out what it was, it made me want one....

Some riders even fit a vented clutch casing to let MORE noise out!!

Cheers!

Personally I don't care for the sound of the dry clutches at all on Ducs, thankfully, the exhaust note usually drowns it out when they're movin'

Was a 1098 at Rufforth last weekend, nearly had a sex wee in me jeans  Certianly got a twitch in the nether regions :P

Didn't hear it leave, but heard that fightered TL leave, sounded awsome.

They rattle like some small stones in an old bean can being shaken vigorously!
Fine when the clutch is pulled in, so you do see them being held like that a lot as it does sound awful otherwise IMHO. 8O
Seen a few with open type covers (to let those stones fall out ? ha ha)

Being the owner of a couple of dry clutch Ducati's I can attest to the row they make when in neutral with the clutch out which only gets a lot worse as the plates and/or basket wears :(

On the plus side, as was mentioned when gears engaged and you are going you dont hear a lot :D

Funnily enough the early 851 I have (1987 red/white/green jobbie) has a much better clutch than the later one as it only rattles with the clutch pulled in.

If you hear a superbike ducati and it has a quiet clutch then ther is a problem

RC8 instead?

Post by gilson »

Hmmm, the big question is, RC8 or 1098? I'm more tempted by the RC8 because of two things, 1) more comfortable and adujustable, 2) no rattle clutch.

What would you go for?

Think the RC9 might be a better bet (or whtever they call the next one).

This '8' has a lot of gearbox issues with it being an off their shelf box sort of bodged into the system. It can't handle the additional power.
It looks great though.

So for me (and I'm biased as a work supplier/mate has a 1098R) it'll have the be the Duke.
He had the 'S' and sold it after a month as he really didn't like it and preferred his ZX10 he bought at the same time ( 8O ).
Says the 1098R is incredible, very hard to keep the front wheel down and not very nice as a road bike really but amazing just the same.
He also has a genuine Foggy Replica 996. Hmmmmm. Maybe I should start supplying him with goods rather than the other way round eh?

Tried a 1098S at Brands the other week... it was incredible! When I got off it after my session I was speechless! Handled like a dream, incredible brakes, sounded awesome & the power throughout the rev range was astounding! It went like a rocket! A bike like that is wasted on the road tho me thinks....

Would probably never buy another Duc (I used to have an ST4), cos they are just too damn expensive to maintain. Nice if you can afford it tho...
