Sluggish starter

Post by flak monkey »

Before I start pulling things apart - battery is good and charging ok, regulator is good, cables are all clean and tight.

But even then sometimes, especially when hot, it's got enough resistance to stall the starter.

Just a sign of a starter on it's last legs or? I might just pull the starter off, strip it and clean it for the sake of it, but before I do that is it just a common issue with the VTR?

Check under the rubber hood on the starter for corrosion on the terminal bolt.
It may be that your whole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.

Check the main earth connection at the other end of the cable on the negative side of the battery.

as the guys have said, check all the connections, I have done a write up in the workshop section of how to take apart and clean a starter motor.
I also sell reconditioned starter motors for the storm and various other Honda bikes.
tbh as long as nothing is broken internally, it should just need a very good clean, but it's easy to break the black plastic round insulator when undoing the two exterior nuts, so be careful mate.

Some good suggestions so far. Have you checked what volts the battery drop too while cranking :?: it might just be it's getting a bit done.

As A/pineapple say, take care with the black insulator. Letting the starter motor bolt (the one that holds the main cable) spin when trying to undo the nuts is what can damage it,

That will be it. The clue is that it's worse when hot.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.
