We do it all the time, in fact, today was one of those times :)

We have a hinged front wheel mount bolted up the front on the van (behind cabin)
Folding Alloy ramp
Handle bar strap
Normal tire downs

Process

Open van door
Position ramp with location pin, so it cant slip or move
Start bike and walk it up ramp into van
Front wheel then locates and locks into stand (pretty much holds bike upright, can take both hands off, it just stays there)
Fit Handle bar straps
Attached tire downs
Secure bike
Done.

You can tire off the rear wheel, we find we don't need it, just depends how silly you drive.

The stand in a variation of this.... they all do the same thing

Ours was from ALDI of all places, it is more one piece of channel the whole way, but essentially, it does exactly the same job.
Amazingly, you don't need to bolt it in the that hard even.

Yeah, ALDI were selling those rear wheel hugger things too.
We don't use one and my friend drives like a nutter!

I guess it depends how far you are going and how many corners.
On his trips, with rear wheel completely free, he finds it doesn't even move left or right more than an inch at worst.
He drives some seriously twisty roads to get to my place, its fine every time.

Sorry it doesn't show much, but that's the bike in his van with the above set up, his tool box covers that front stand.
It honestly sits in there will all his tools no probs, nothing is strapped down much.

(Why does he van his bike, his wife will not let him own a road bike.... so..... he bought one, hides it in the workshop, loads it in the van and drives to my house, reverse on the way home, in which he can come home late, after a few post ride beers and looks like he has been out working late... What a good hubby)

Why doesn't he tell his wife.

" I have bought a motorcycle, I will be riding it on the road, so deal with it or clear off ".

The lives some people live is almost comical :)

His brother was killed on a road bike on the exact roads we both ride (head on with a delivery truck that was across the white line mid corner)
So there is nothing comical about it. It's just what he has to do to keep the peace.
Secondly, you don't know his wife, trust me, its easier this way
Thirdly, if he told her to clear off, they would both be with out a house with no means to buy another.

Spot on llyodie.
My friend told me after 6 months, that it is so much more enjoyable that his missus doesn't know, it makes it exciting every time.
As you say, its just like having a girlfriend on the side :)
If his missus knew about it, he would get grief every time he rode it, that he wasn't working or spending time with her, or house chores etc....

This way, he gets the best of both worlds.
And when he comes home, it looks like he's been working all day :)
Its been this way for 2.5 years now.

I got one of these

seems well made, works fine can't really fault it, I had intended to make one but at just over £35 it didn't seem worth the effort.
I holds the bike much more securely in the van compared with just using straps you can also use it with a rear paddock stand and on a bike table makes the bike more stable to work on.
