laptop gone wrong
I have had my asus laptop for about 8-9 years and it has finally give up to the ghost yesterday
I`m gutted
but I have saved nearly all my passwords and some programs to a separate hard drive so not to bad.
now can I take the hard drive out of my laptop and put it in my pc to get any information I might of missed?
thanks

Re: laptop gone wrong
You can, laptops usually (I think?) Use 2.5" HDD's rather than the 3.5" HDD's desktops commonly use so you'll need an adapter to hold it securely in a HDD tray.. you can probably pick them up off eBay for a fiver. SATA/power cables should be the same though

Re: laptop gone wrong
Yes you can, usually.
Sometimes the adapters on laptop drives can be different, especially Dell ones. However most are simple SATA drives.
If you have a desktop PC, just plug it in to your mortherboard with another SATA data and power cable. If you're stuck on this bit, PM me I will send you my phone no.
The easiest thing may be to buy this:
That way you don't have to take your desktop apart. You can just plug it into a USB socket and then copy all your data across to your desktop HDD.

Re: laptop gone wrong
AFAIK you will only be able to do that so long as it's not the hard drive in your laptop that has packed up.bazzashadow wrote: now can I take the hard drive out of my laptop and put it in my pc to get any information I might of missed?

Well done in backing up what you have
Chris.
Re: laptop gone wrong
2 Options;
1. (Fast) Put the Laptop drive into a USB case and plug it into the PC as an external drive.
2. (Slow) Plug the Laptop drive into the Mother board (best option) of your PC using an adapter if necessary.
With it connected via this method, you can run Data Recovery software on your Host PC to dig up files may have even been deleted on your laptop drive.
Anyway 8-9 from a laptop!!!! Holysmoke! You are not going to believe how fast your new laptop will be ;)

Re: laptop gone wrong

Re: laptop gone wrong
I'd recommend Asus, currently use an Asustek motherboard and GPU in my desktop, same as most of my coworkers, and the quality hasn't changed.
I did have an MSI laptop but the problems with the hardware were almost unending. Was very common with the model apparently (GE60) but I steer clear of them now anyway

Re: laptop gone wrong
Personally, I dont like them.bazzashadow wrote:has anyone used ebuyer before and if so are they any good
Google 'ebuyer rma rejected'
They have an in office competition to see how many valid returns they can reject. There was a pic posted on their own website with a chart on the background.
If you want a new one, you can't go wrong with Dell really. I buy all our work ones from there. Bought 6 or 7 this last year and they're all spot on. Just get their most basic 17" and it'll easily be good enough for every day use.

Re: laptop gone wrong
that is what you should do, but how many times do you hear "I wish I'd backed it up" when it's too late.bazzashadow wrote: I backed it up every so often
If the HD spins when powered up you should be okay.bazzashadow wrote:and the laptop fan starts and power switch lights up after pressing the power button then about 5 seconds and it turns off again
That didn't take long in getting a replacement
The one you've ordered looks reasonable spec's to me.

Chris.
I ordered fast because sitting at this pc does my head and back in
and the only thing I don`t like is not having a dedicated graphics card
Re: laptop gone wrong
In that case it's not a new pc you need, it's a chairbazzashadow wrote: I ordered fast because sitting at this pc does my head and back in
