Update Your Flash plugins

Post by VTRDark »

Not a question but as it's computer related, a heads up to update your Adobe flash browser plugin or you could be vulnerable to attack.
Adobe Systems is once again rolling out an emergency Flash update that patches a critical vulnerability under active attack to compromise the computers of unsuspecting users.

The latest Flash versions fix a remote code-execution bug that, as Ars reported last week, recently came under attack in the Angler exploit kit. Malware purveyors and other types of online crooks use such kits to seed compromised websites with attack code. Once people visit the sites with vulnerable computers, the booby-trapped pages surreptitiously exploit the vulnerabilities and install backdoors that can be used to log keystrokes, steal passwords, and install new pieces of malware at will.

FFS Adobe it's about time this crap is killed off totally.

Another Adobe Flash vulnerability.
http://arstechnica.com/security/2015/02 ... ers-to-do/

I have now made the decision to abandon Flash in favour of HTML5. I have installed a Firefox addon HTML5 Video Everywhere along with Flash Disable I have also installed Disable HTML5 Fullscreen Alert which is one of the little annoyances of the HTML5 player.

I haven't completely uninstalled Flash as of yet because there are certain times when it is needed, for example some of the catch up TV services who are a bit slow on the transition away from Flash, I believe mostly because of licensing restrictions and their advertisements, hence the reason I have the Flash Disable/Enable button.

As far as viewing video's on the likes of YouTube, Vimeo etc I have had no direct issues. I say direct as I have had a few issues with embedded Youtube here for example. I have not had issues with embedded Youtube vids on some other sites/forums so this tells me that the issue is due to the way the sites/forums embed the code from Youtube.

On here all I get now is a blank container so I shall from now on also provide the direct link on Youtube under the embedded link for those that take the same route as me and/or are viewing on a mobile, I would suggest others do the same for convenience. Note this makes no difference to those that post the direct links as it stands here already because of the Youtube posting difficulties here.

This is going to become more of an issue as Youtube and others make the transition away from Flash so can I suggest we look into the way (coding) we use to embed Youtube vids on this forum. Lets make it a little easier for users.

To round this up, all is pretty much going smoothly with HTML5 so far and with the few exceptions I can still view online video's. Where there will be problems for users is when they want to view a Flash based site, banners, advertisements and games (did anyone read up on the recent hacker attack on Minecraft) Kids are perfect targets as they love to download all this crap. Personally I would rather stay away from these kind of things, Flash SWF files, as this is where the majority of vulnerabilities are. There are experimental addons working on this like the following but they are still in the early stages of development.

Whenever and very rarely I stumble upon a site which insists on providing content through Flash only I just walk away. If it's a video and I really, really, REALLY want to watch it, One can usually easily find a HTML5 version of it somewhere else. If it's other content, then... well, hello, it's 2015, no sane web developer uses Flash (at least exclusively), so it must be either obsolete, crap or malware or both and possibly contains hidden viruses. SWF's make a convenient transport for this.

Slightly off topic but I have just installed a free application for downloading and converting online videos including HTML5. This works for Mac and PC. Take a look.
