Warm up?

Post by VTRPiG »

Hey guys just a quick question about warming up the bike before riding it. When I bought the bike the guy told me that he always let it warm up to around 60 degree before setting off, which j have always stuck too. Is that about right? Or is it ok to ride before that?

And the rear end is still intact!! Woohoo! Only mishap has been forgetting to turn the heated grips off :eek2  Really need to wire them into the head light at some stage :P

I never warm mine up on the stand [too noisy], I get the bike down onto the road, get on it, hit the starter and as soon as its running I get intp 1st gear and trundle off .

just dont thrash it or labour the engine till the oil is warm, and it will all be ok

Put it this way it is not advisable to let it idle for too long on the side stand due to oil starvation to the front pot. I usually start it up whilst sitting on the bike keeping it upright will wait for about a minute then move off. I won't give it a gob full till she has warmed up allowing the oil to become more viscous. Remember allowing to reach 60 degrees before moving off will not have warmed up the gearbox & drive train

The routine for me is get on the bike and start it.
Put on my hat and gloves and then go.

Just take it a bit easy the first mile or so and then she is good to go.

This has worked just fine for the last 95K miles I have put on the bike.

The worst thing you can do to an engine is to let it idle like that. You could glaze the bores for one thing. With modern oils there's no need. There was a big artical a few years ago in MCN and I think the main input was from HRC.

Don't matter much.
They run when they run, stop when they don't. Then it's an upgrade opportunity.
Just ride the thing.
Mind you, mine just blew up spectacularly, so what do I know.

Luckily, it's an upgrade opportunity.........
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

Well you do tend to treat your bikes rather hard Tony :D I suppose one view is to stretch it till it blows when testing new parts, wish i could be that brutal but the finances would not be able to keep up 8)
