HELP, done a partial bafflectomy and now it backfires

Post by saint gaz »

hi guys,

I read a couple of threads on here about removing the baffles, I decided not to go the whole hog straight away and opted for a partial.

So i got out mt drill and proceeded to drill 4x10mm holes in the end of each can, really like the sound now. :D

BUT
on my first run out this morning it was a bit sluggish, stalled once, and then while going at about 40 seemed to choke, lost all power for a split second and just as a was about to pull the clutch and pull over it backfires. Gets to work without any other issues. (about 8 miles)

Coming home it again is a bit sluggish and back fires 3/4 times at one point locking the back wheel  then stalling on a roundabout.
granted tyres are only just legal,(new road pilot 3s by weekend) floor was wet and was in first.

So the question is, have i fooked up, and what do i need to do to fix it?

Doubt the issues you describe have much to do with the holes you have drilled.

Did you remove the exhaust to do the drilling? If so it may be that you now have an air leak in the joints, were the gaskets OK or did you replace ? Check that the clamps are tight.

Sure someone will be along shortly to shed some light on the backfiring, it may be a fuelling issue...

same thoughts here, most likely you disturbed something else when working on the exhausts

no, I left the cans on while I drilled the holes.

I did clean the chain and sprockets and removed the front cover to get at the front sprocket, was tough getting back on due to the clutch slave cover. had to bleed the clutch afterwards. but cant see that being the cause. :(

Could it be the petrol I'm putting in? filled up with tesco momentum the other day.

I can't see how drilling a few holes around the baffles will cause that, it's just a coincidence. As has been said check for any leaks in the exhaust system, mainly around the seals. Juts stick you hand over the end of each can when running and you will hear any leaks. Or have a careful feel around without burning yourself. Have you had the tank at all recently.

No not really touch anything like that, could water be the cause? I did jet wash it at the weekend.

Not really, that should soon evaporate, turn to stem or get spat out. Is you bike an early modal or later one with digital dash and PAIR emissions thing.

Odometer  OK so it sounds like a late registered early modal then. No PAIR which is a good thing. These cause a bit of popping and banging on the overun, so ruled out.

No air leaks around the pipes. Took it to hammer and tongues in warringtin this morning and is booked in for a run on the dyno on Monday.
