Electrical fault

Post by TonyW650 »

Ok guys I've got one for you.

Now I know a fair old bit about electronics and electricals, having a hnc in electronics engineering and a fully qualified spark and fire alarm engineer. I deal with electrics all the tie but now I'm stupped with the Storm
Ive checked and clean all the earths but its just got me stupped.
dont matter if engine is running or not.
turn left or right signals on they flash ok.
turn on left or right signal and then flash head light or turn the head light on and the flash rate changes.
its like its got a earth fault from somewhere.
only changes I have made recently is fitted front and rear led indicators and a led tail light.
had a new reg rec a few weeks back, and ive tried it with a couple of differant batteries, no change.
got me completely stumped

Help!!!!!

have you cleaned the contacts in the lhs switch gear .
fit an relay for the head light that should help take some of the strain away from the switch gear because it sounds like the old electrics cant cope no more lol

Your led lights may be causing the problem, I remember reading somewhere that led indicator lights may need a different relay due to their lower power drain may be worth looking into this

hey lloydie

Ive completely stripped and clean the switch gear with proper contact cleaner, lovely and clean lol
think I may end up having to have a day of cleaning all the contacts on everything.
taken off the main earth from battery to back of engine cleaned both ends
when I fitted the new reg rec I cleaned the earth that comes out onto the top bolt, only thing that I have changed is I fitted stainless steel bolts, now stainless isnt as goos a conductor as steel.
would that make a difference?

Ive fitted all the proper resistor packs, as I say only does it when you turn head light on or flash main beam

even changed the flasher relay just to check

I'm no expert in bike electrics but my CBR had a similar fault after fitting LED indicators. It was caused by the previous owner's love for twisting wires together and taping it up with masking tape and essentially the headlamp circuit shorting into the indicator circuit after I'd disturbed the wiring.

There was moss in the main wiring loom, and most of the fuse box had melted into one short-y glob =/

That was one fun bike to get running again!

Not saying your bike's bodged together, but maybe there's a worn / split cable somewhere that's shorting?

Is the flashing getting slower or faster when you put the headlights on?
Working manual CCTs thanks to the wonderful folks of this forum :)

Snake

ive gone through the loom where I can get at it and cant find any damage or twisted wires etc....
any work ive done on it has been soldered and covered with shrink on, its just got me stumped.

just wierd that as soon as you turn the head light on it changes the flash rate, take the bulb out and it stops it lol

the head light is taking the power .
fit a relay to the head light .
the relay will also make the light brighter
