possible reg/rec fault

Post by TonyW650 »

Hi guys,

Right not been out on storm for a couple of weeks and had to put battery on charge the other day.
fired storm up today, cant go out got no baby sitter, but done my normal of checking everything was working.
Question is.
Bike ticking over, indicators wont work either direction, turn on head light, indicators start working, so more current is being drawn through the reg/rec and alternator.
engine not running indicators working.....
am I right into thinking possible reg/rec fault?

just to as reg/rec was very hot to the touch after only a few mins ticking over

am i right in thinking if it was a bad earth problem it would be doing it all the time.
engine running, no load indicators dont work, load engine with head lights etc indicators work.
engine not running, nothing going through reg/rec indicators work

earth fault would surely cause it to happen all the time?

benny,
Am I right in assuming that its breaking down due to heat, when its running with no lights on etc... the electrical energy is being turned into heat and its braking down under heat.
when I turn the lights on etc.... the electrical energy is being used by the bike, as in lights (load)etc so the reg/rec is cooler and isnt breaking down so its working.
when the bike isnt running its running off the battery only so reg/rec isnt being used so no fault.

just assume its fkt if its the unfinned swan vesta box r/r
get a finned one off fleabay.
one off a cbr125 will do.
mines off a 1100 blackbird.
as long as its the kettle plug type itll fit straight on.

no you dont have to fit one off an r1 lol

If after a new R/R it doesn't still run right, then try a new battery, as a failed R/R can also damage the battery.

+1 on that. I fitted the exact same last week and works a treat. The cbr125 one is at least half the size again as well as being finned! ;-)

A couple of years ago I changed my crappy resin R/R for a Yamaha R1 (2001) and it's been perfect ever since. Cheap as chips on ebay and a really easy mod too. This Yam R/R is larger but is finned so cools efficiently.

Same here, I have the R1 R/R but it's not a straight swap as the plugs are different. But it is very easy to change.
