The best tool is the one in the Honda tool kit under your seat, if you don't have one you might struggle to get a halfords socket down the tunnel between the cams, it is a tight fit.

I bought one of the Halfords Blue T handle type socket tools with the wobbly socket on the end and that works OK if you don't have the bike toolkit  It's a funny size, can't remember the spark plug socket size (It could be a 12 but unsure) but it's the same size as a 19mm standard socket.
Starter and other screw went off no issue ---OK done
Why are you removing the starter to do your CCT's.

I got to say your post sounds a bit worrying and thing's don't seem to be going straight forward. There shouldn't be anything difficult about removing the fuel tank. Did you disconnect the fuel pipes at the carb end or something. I just hope your generator cap is not seized  I take it you checked that first.
shame I could have finish today.
Just take your time and double check everything you do.

I'm not sure if everything is there, I think one of the screwdriver bits may be missing, but the main things, like the rear of the petrol tank support and plug spanner are there:-
