Quick question. Did the new speedo sensor work? I got excatly the same problem and just wondered whether a new sensor solved it for you?

No. Unless the problem is a loose connection at the speedo sensor.

thanks tony.
found out for myself today, took it off gave it a wipe, put it back, same trouble.
took the clocks off, tightend all the small screws(were a little corroded) put back, went to work and all was ok for about ten miles then it just stopped working again and nothing all the way home.
will have another go at the clocks tomorow but have a feeling its the sensor. :(

There is one other possibility, which would be worth checking before you buy a replacement.
If the reg-rec is failing the excess voltage that can result seems to play havoc with the instruments.
Put a meter on it and make sure that output voltage going into the battery is less than 15 volts, and that output towards the clocks is no more than that as well.

But corrosion behind the clocks isn't uncommon.

If it turns out to be those I have a set of MPH clocks I don't need. I bought them but decided to stick with the KPH set I have installed with an overlay.

If all the lights are out, then it's likely to be an earth problem.
Try running an auxiliary earth lead to any frame bolt, nearest useful one is probably the front coil mounting bolt.

Here's a very efficient one from a left-hand drive firestorm...
