Removing the fairing

Post by stormcloud »

and getting it back on properly.
This post is for people like me who aren't really confident with playing with their bikes too much, but do like to have a go.

I just removed the VTR's fairing to clean underneath.
It turned out to be easier than I thought, and I'd actually removed some screws etc that didnt need to be touched.

Next time, this is what I'll do:

Mirrors off, four nuts.
Screen off, four screws.
Unplug idicators- bend awaythe soft brackets holding the wires first to get better access.
Unplug running light and main headlight
Unfasten two plastic fairing locators: underneath, on bottom inner of fairing on each side, using flat metal brackets bolted to the engine.
Undo fairing bolts, four hex-key'd (rear/side of fairing)

Thats it.
Now, gently pull appart to clear the radiators and the whole thing comes off in one piece (with the headlight)

Reverse to put it back on, but I didnt do anything up tight until everything was located and part-screwed in and I was happy all was OK.

Bike looks weird, but gives great access to clean out dust/bugs etc.

Satisfying, and the second time will be much faster/easier etc.

Cheers,

Try it without taking off the screen, i've taken the fairings off my VTR's aleast 20 times and never taken the screen off without any problems.
