Is this a 16lt or 19lt tank?

Post by Gerrit »

I can pick up this new tank at a local Honda dealer, for a bargain.

They sent me these 2 photos, could it perhaps be a 19lt tank?

It has the honda wing on the tank which makes it a 19l tank  , the 16L had "Firestorm" logo on tank.

Gerrit,
I agree with AMcQ, it's a 19ltr tank. As well as the decals/transfers being different the 16ltr tanks fuel tap is held on with two bolts, no bolt holes around the fuel outlet on that one.

Awesome news guys, I will buy the tank.

What problems do I face in terms of installation?

Gerrit,
The fuel tap is different. The 19ltr tank fuel outlet arrangement doesn't have an on/off valve iirc so you'll need one of those, as the one you have on your 16ltr tank won't fit.

I'm not 100% sure the 19ltr tank will fit over your airbox. It probably will, but bear that in mind just in case you need to add the cost of replacing that too.

I think the fuel cap will swap OK, the only other thing you need to check is the fuel level sender, the new bikes have a fuel gauge, the old ones just have the red light. I am not sure if they fit, but Benny Hedges fitted a 19l tank this year, so lets wait for his answer on that.
He may even have started a thread on the subject, so have a search

over to you Mr Hedges

yes i put a 19L tank on mine and it does fit over the 16L airbox without mods.
as to the fuel tap, just use it.
it doesnt need a vac line so you will need to cap yours off from the rear cyl (use it for carb balance line or for scottoiler)
you will need a 10mm tee and some 10mm hose & pipe clamps to join the existing twin fuel pipes to the single outlet on the 19L fuel tap.
in fact step it up to 12mm hose and it stops the fuel starvation when you are racing it.
the 16L fuel tap will not fit the 19L tank, so if you want facility to turn off the fuel, get some extra hosetails & a 15mm plumber's service valve (like on a bog cistern) and fit it inline.

the filler cap is the same on both tanks.
the fuel level sensor on the later tank is a rheostat type that lights up the bars on the digi dash.
the 16L tank has a float switch that lights the red light up - you can't use the rheostat on the fuel light, it won't work and will probably set your bike on fire as you are putting 12v through a coil of wire - dont try it lol 8O
the 2 sensors wil fit in either tank though, the mounting hole is exactly the same, but if you are swapping them over i recommend you source a new o ring from honda or silvers or somewhere, or make a gasket out of rubber.
it Will leak if you suse the old o ring - and if you use a sealant, silicone gasket or other, it will just delay the leak.
you dont want fuel dripping onto a hot engine and rear header so do it proper.
test with 1.2L of fuel before you fill it up.

also it's worth fitting an inline fuel filter if you are using a 2nd hand tank as it may have been stood a while, fine rust & sh1t inside etc - easier to change a fuel filter than strip the carbs at the roadside!

also check the steering lock, that you don't have a trap zone between the throttle and the tank on full right lock - i dropped mine cos of this....
the later model has slightly differentbars - one reason for this is because of the slightly wider tank.
i got round this by welding some 8mm nuts on the bottom yoke when i changed it - up to you, just saying check for it as you can fail mot for a trap zone.

you will probably notice once its fitted, the fuel light still comes on at the same mileage as the 16L tank.... but you will have 5-6L left in reserve.
you can alter this by gently bending the long wire of the fuel sensor float.
trial & error though - i left mine with 5L reserve which is a good 50 mile easy.
You do not have to say anything. But it may harm your defence if you do not mention when posting something which you later rely on in quote. Anything you do say may be ripped to sh*t.

I have done this mod to my 99 storm, i used a varadero fuel tap which bolts straight on to the bottom of the tank & fitted a T piece between the carbs, i can now turn the fuell on & off at my leisure, i can post piccies if you like ?
Its the sound of thunder at the back end that makes me smile at the front end !

Postage might be a bit excessive from South Africa if they have

Hi steve, I did not buy the tank. The cost of the tank plus the respray does not justify the 3lt increase in capacity.

We have gas stations here ebery few kms.

So I did not buy the unit.

Whats ur email adress, and I will forward you the Honda dealers info.
