Hi. As eggshell has kindly nominated my mobile as a contact, here it is: 0798 177 2939. Of course this might turn out to be a premium rate number, with all proceeds going towards the purchase of a Penske shock!
First the bad news. Saturday's weather is looking iffy, with another depression coming in from the southwest, so an early start may get you to the Midlands before it arrives here. Bugger all to do in Coalville, so you may want to check out the Donington Collection or some other attractions.
The good news is that Sunday is looking fine. Proposed to leave Vic at around 11.30, but if there are stragglers we can hang around a bit. The route should also have a few stop off points, to play catch-up.
The Route
Leave Coalville westbound. One mile after last roundabout turn right to cut through to A512. Left then right onto B5324. Five miles of sweepers, with two warnings. Top of the hill at Griffydam is a blind left, with a cross roads, so beware of Volvos etc. Also there is a blindish right just before a pink pub.
At Belton take third left, through village, then right at junction. This road takes you through to A453 near the airport. Warning: the tar and gravel brigade were out last week, so caution advised. Go west on A453 and take right junction for Melbourne. After a mile there is an entrance to Donington Park. We can stop here, either in it or near it, depending on gate control on the day.
Head through Melbourne and west to Ticknall then left on B5006 to Ashby. We could terrorise Ashby high street if we want, but the route is south towards the A42. Follow B4116 to Twycross, then south on A444 for five miles. After a series of nice sweepers there is a hard left junction onto the roman road. Two warnings: This is mainly straight, but throws in a few unannounced bends, so be warned if you are at going full chat and if you take the canal bridge at Sutton Cheney at full tilt you will take off and you will crash!
Continue on to A447. Right onto main road then first left, towards Kirkby Mallory. As you get to the village there is an entrance to Mallory Park, follow this to the trackside pub. Fag break. Next bit is rather cross country, but fairly scenic.
Take lane opposite Mallory Park exit to B582, turn right for Desford. First left before Desford then left again. One mile right turn, then immediate left, to Thornton. Hard right junction at Thornton, downhill past reservoir. Turn left and follow road to A511 at Markfield. Straight across to Newtown Linford. Junction left at village, uphill for a mile, then left at top of the hill. Two mile straight but warning, beware of cars pulling out of blind junction halfway.
Right junction towards Woodhouse, one mile, left junction and through the woods for two miles. Left at the lights, up hill and straight for three miles. Warning, watch out for radar van which sometimes parks up at the top of the hill. Right at the lights, straight on for two miles to Whitwick. Bottom of hill take a left and this gets you back to the Coalville bypass and the Vic is nearby. Head off to local carnival for bands, beer and burgers!
If this sounds complicated, I will have some photocopied maps, you can drop out and get back to Coalville easily anytime and if I'm in front we wont be going that quick anyway. Hope to see you there.
