Welding a plate to bottom of side stand?

Post by sirch345 »

Has anyone successfully using an Arc Welder, welded mild steel to our Firestorm/Superhawk side stand :?:
I'm intending to weld a 6mm thick plate (mild steel) to the foot of the stand to make the bike more upright.

Any advice on what rods work would be very helpful,

Cheers,

Chris.

It's a cast iron or forged stand, not sure which.
Check this with Cheeky Kev, his welding is legendary.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

what i done was drill it, popped a 8mm bolt through it and a small 10mm bit of alloy tube under the foot of the stand, job done, its been working grand for 4 years

Thanks Tony for your reply

I'm thinking similar to you on the metal used for the side stand, although I'm not sure cast iron would take the abuse the stand gets, I think it would be too brittle and would snap easily, although I may be wrong on that.

I'll PM Cheekykev

Thanks for that suggestion Rob

It may well come down to something like that, it's always good to have a plan B :)

I have once welded RD350 kickstarter which is a similar material to the storms sidestand.
The weld didn't last, but in case of the sidestand it's not a big deal.
No tension or bending forces acting on the weld - it basically just prevents the plate from falling down.
I'd give it a try.

Also, try googling "big foot side stand".
There a few bolt on types on the market, that sandwich two plates onto the original foot. They are mostly designed to increase the area of the foot, but they add height, too.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

Chris, I think it's a forging rather than cast and when I welded a new boot loop onto it it welded fine with just arc welding.

Er just fit a Blackbird stand instant uprightness... OK you might have to adapte the prong as its really short but looks better than a club foot...

Not to a club racer...
