What bore is the carbs on a VTR 1000?

Post by buzzer »

Hi Guys, new member here...

What bore is the carbs on the VTR 1000 and are there any differences in the carbs over the different years it was produced?

No real difference, some regions used differing pilot jets and needle profile but nothing that makes much of a difference.
Can't remember the throat size but they are huge, right on the limit of what will work and still tick over.

I'm assuming you mean the Firestorm and not an SP....

The venturi is 48 mm.

A year or so ago I got obsessed with finding out as much as i could about the data on these carbs, which started when I was trying to get new OEM needles and finding out about the needle differences. As Tony says, none of it makes a huge difference.

I posted the following nerdy info:

There were a few carb changes in four stages in UK models, namely '97, '98-'00, '01-'04, and '05-'06, as follows:

'97: #45 pilots, needles A1UD front A1UC rear, carb ID VPT0B
'98-'00: #48 pilots, needles A1UD front A1UC rear, carb ID VPT0G
'01-'04: #45 pilots, needles A1UF front A1UE rear, carb ID VPT3A
'05-'06: #45 pilots, needles A1UF front A1UE rear, carb ID VPT3E

General consensus is that the A1UD/C needles are richer than the A1UF/E ones.

I don't know if these different carb ID numbers reflect any actual changes in anything integral like the needle jet or what.

Interestingly there are some different part numbers for the slide springs...

'97-'00: 16050-MBB-640
'01-'06: 16050-MBB-D41

However I don't know if a new part number always means a new part.

The specified idle speed changed as well (!):

'97: 1,100 ± 100 rpm
'98-'06: 1,200 ± 100 rpm

Thanks guys, that's VERY helpful. I will now be on the lookout for a set as they are 48 mm, that's just what I need for a special I am building out of a Ducati ST4 which I want to convert to carbs.

Are there any other options for me apart from the VTR?

If anyone knows of a set let me know. I cant seem to post a wanted advert on the forum here for some reason...

Ah, thanks. I did read the FAQ's but missed that! I probably wont get to 50 posts as the carbs are for a Ducati. the info above is very useful though. Looks like I will have to keep an eye on Ebay!

can you guys think of any other bikes with a BIG pair of carbs?

VTR carbs were the largest CVs ever fitted to a production bike.
Another place to look is the carbs off of a snowmoblie....some of them run pretty large carbs

largest stock carbs ever fitted to a snowmobile were (round-slide) Mikuni VM44s as fitted to the 1995-96 Ski-Doo Mach One and 1999-2000 Ski-Doo MXZ 670 HO.

Figured you would know not only what was fitted but what it was mounted on

Largest I have heard on snowmobiles has been 52mm (Lectron and other "cottage" brands), on built-up large displacement (1300cc +) three-cylinder smokers
