Reculator/Rectifier

Post by vestphaelpower »

Hi my VTR knowledge library:)
I'm planning on upgrading the regulator before i blows up. What is your best advise to buy, when also it should be easy to fit and install?

Look for Mosfet FH020 either new or on some newer Yamahas - Not a plug&play mod as wiring / soldering / crimping tools & skills required.

Avoid cheap new Chinese copies.

Thx for the reply, I'll have a look at it. WHat's wrong with just buying a new one, which is suited for the VTR?

Later model Storms were fitted with an 'improved' finned version reg/rec. Reg /rec's produce heat as a by product of what they do, over time this can cause a melt down of the unit, burnt wires & conectors, worse it over charges the battery wich can bulge or even catch fire... The fin's are there to help with cooling but they can still fail.

Newer technology in a Mossfet type reg/rec produces far less heat so aleviate the issues.

I've used BMW S1000r reg/rec with no issues.

It's not just Storms that suffer this 80's Hondas all use the same reg/rec & all suffer the same issue...

Will this rectifier do? It has cooling fins and should be a perfect fit? I guess it's not MOSFET, but still... :)

Yes but I would imagine it's just a cheapo Chinese copy sold by mr Pole after adding a few quid on top...To be fair these days, BMW, Honda et all have all thire electrical componants made in China * for cost reasons...but they quality control is probably of a much higher standard in the plants they use.

Have a good look around on e-bay & spend a bit more to buy a known genuine fittment s/h unit.

Look for any that have the additional brackets on them, then you know it's come off a bike... Like this one...

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-S1000RR- ... Swbf5bUgiI

This one is cheapest gen one on ebay ATM...Be quick as that is cheap & I might buy it...

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-S1000RR- ... Swl71bYi9d

Now you can buy fitting kits for these but it's easy enough to fit without them. As long as the conection block on your R/R hasnt suffered from any scorching you can unpick the conectors from the block. Put some heat shrink over the bear metal bits & plug them straight in. 3x Yellow wires can go on in any order but the red & green must be fitted the same as they came on the one your taking off...IIRC green is right, red is left...

Image
This is one i fitted to one of my bikes with a fitting kit...

Image
This one as fitted to my F2 less room so no fitting kit, dry fit prior to heat shrink.

The only other issue is you will have to relocate the flasher relay, I just move mine to the inside of the rail & zip tie on...

*They use Chinese factories mainly for cost but also as they use kids so smaller hands plus the added benifit that they dont need to squint to see fine details**...

**allegedly... OK I may have made that up...

Hi, where can I buy these units? And do they fit without having to modify the pins? :)

Because they are still old style diode based and they fail as often as they can just to aggravate riders and remind them that a new part is not always a better part, when new is just old in new wrapper
