not road tested it yet, but it perfectly fits the symptoms, so I have high confidence it will be all OK now

And Pete, although to be fair it could have been anyone of the suggestions. Well done guys.

Al, where did you get your tap repair kit from in the end :?:

defined an easy test to prove the diaphragm was faulty that any of us can do.

Before I took the tank off, I got the big syringe that I use for brake bleeding etc and a length of hose. took the normal vac hose off the back of the tap and used the syringe to apply vacuum to the tap .... I wasn't sure what good or bad would feel like, but the result was clear ... I could pull the plunger out of the syringe without any resistance, so the vacuum was leaking away. ... and with the new diaphragm fitted and repeating the test, there was very obvious build up of vacuum and resistance against pulling the plunger.

the kit was from NRP . this was the kit for 16l tank bike .. it has the main diaphragm, a new spring and the rubber plunger part that actually closes the fuel on and off.

to complete the thread for those in the future who have the same symptoms - after a hardcore roadtest in devon, yes the new fuel tap diaphragm fixed the problem  no issues with extended Wide open Throttle
